How much do video coding jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for video coding in the United States is $27.70, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $32.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Video Coding Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Video Coding Specialist, you need a solid understanding of video compression standards (such as H.264, H.265/HEVC), programming skills (C/C++ or Python), and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with video processing tools, codec libraries (like FFmpeg or x264), and experience with hardware acceleration are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to collaborate effectively set outstanding professionals apart. These competencies ensure efficient video delivery, optimized resource usage, and seamless integration of video technologies in various applications.

What are some of the typical challenges faced by professionals working in video coding roles?

Professionals in video coding often encounter challenges such as optimizing video quality while minimizing file sizes, meeting real-time processing requirements, and ensuring compatibility across diverse devices and platforms. Balancing compression efficiency with computational complexity is a common task, especially when working with emerging standards like HEVC or AV1. Collaboration with software engineers, hardware teams, and product managers is essential to address integration issues and maintain seamless user experiences.

What is video coding?

Video coding is the process of compressing and encoding digital video files so they can be efficiently stored, transmitted, and played back. It involves converting raw video data into a format that uses less bandwidth and storage while retaining as much visual quality as possible. Video coding professionals work with algorithms and codecs (like H.264 or HEVC) to optimize video for streaming, broadcasting, or archiving. This role is important in industries like streaming services, broadcasting, and video conferencing.

What jobs make 5000 a week without a degree?

Video coding roles, such as freelance video editors or content creators, can earn $5,000 or more weekly through high-demand projects, especially with specialized skills in editing software and a strong portfolio. However, most high-paying jobs in this field require experience, a solid reputation, and often self-employment or contract work rather than formal degrees.

What is the difference between Video Coding vs Video Compression?

AspectVideo CodingVideo Compression
DefinitionProcess of encoding video data using codecs to facilitate storage and transmissionTechnique to reduce video file size by removing redundant data
FocusEncoding standards and algorithms for efficient video representationReducing file size while maintaining quality
Tools & CertificationsH.264, H.265, VP9, AV1; certifications like HEVCUses same codecs; no separate certifications
Work EnvironmentVideo streaming companies, broadcasting, multimedia developmentVideo streaming, content delivery, multimedia storage

Video Coding involves creating efficient encoding standards for video data, while Video Compression focuses on reducing file sizes for easier storage and transmission. Both roles often overlap, but Video Coding emphasizes developing and implementing codecs, whereas Video Compression emphasizes applying these techniques to optimize video files.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

The Challenge:
At Netflix, we are passionate about delivering the best viewing experience to our members. Video encoding and processing is a crucial part of our streaming pipeline. The interoperability of upstream encoding and the downstream decoding capabilities on millions of devices enables us to deliver Netflix experience to our members worldwide. We are looking for a seasoned Software Engineer with deep video processing expertise to join our Video Algorithms team, to build out the best-in-class video encoding solutions across business domains: Live, Ads, and VOD.

About you:

You are a self-driven Software Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You proactively address needs of the team, and collaborate well with our engineering and business partners. You have excellent software development skills and a strong background in video compression and processing algorithms. You constantly strive to improve yourself and the team, and are excited about delivering impact to hundreds of millions of Netflix members worldwide.

The role:

As a Software Engineer responsible in Video Algorithms, you will:

  • Perform in-codec experimentation, and build PoCs to support the team's encoding innovation initiatives. Examples include: scalable video coding, robust encoding and error protection, low-latency encoding, perception-driven encoding optimization.

  • Work with internal partners such as the streaming pipeline, device teams, streaming algorithms, and external partners such as encoder vendors, SOC manufacturers and OEMs to take prototypes into production.

  • Build experimentation systems on top of existing media platforms, using paved path languages such as C/C++, Python and Java, and run large experiments to benchmark a solution in terms of rate-quality tradeoff, latency, system performance, etc.

  • Work on productizing your solutions using paved path tools.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in multimedia software development, with excellent debugging and problem solving skills.

  • MS in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering or equivalent or extensive experience. PhD a plus.

  • In-depth knowledge of video coding standards (AV1, AV2, AVC, HEVC).

  • Rich hands-on experience with open-source/proprietary encoder/decoder codebases, such as libaom, SVT-AV1, dav1d, libx264, libx265.

  • General understanding of video codecs ecosystems, such as TV/mobile/PC SOC/OEM support for different codecs.

  • Fluent coding capability in C/C++, and ability to write systems code in Python or Java.

  • Good communication skills and collaborative spirit to work with partners.

  • Curious to learn, and capable of picking up new skills quickly.

Bonus points:

  • Familiarity with media packaging, transport protocols such as CMAF, DASH, LL-HLS, RTMP and SRT.

  • Low-level performance optimization capability: SIMD, Assembly, etc.

  • Experience with/contribution to open-source projects.

  • Familiarity with video quality metrics.

  • Knowledge in image and signal processing techniques such as image scaling, deinterlacing, frame rate conversion, artifact detection etc.
