Job description

This is an excellent opportunity with a nationally recognized engineering, architecture, and forensics consulting firm based in Willowbrook, Illinois. Raths, Raths & Johnson, Inc. (RRJ) is looking for a motivated, committed, and enthusiastic candidate interested in working with experienced structural engineers and architects to provide technician-level assistance in the construction industry.

This individual would be responsible for assisting with RRJ’s laboratory and field services and general laboratory- and office-related maintenance. An ideal candidate would also have experience in computer-aided drafting (CAD) to assist in developing construction drawings. Assigned tasks depend on the project needs. Below is a list of basic skill sets and expectations for a qualified entry level Laboratory/Field Technician.

Requirements

General Skills

Perform manual labor/carpentry tasks and be proficient in power tool use.

Perform basic computer-related tasks (a working knowledge of word processing, data entry, and similar applications is required).

Travel to job sites and perform errands (e.g., pick up supplies, materials, or equipment) using personal or RRJ vehicle.

Operate photographic tools including video camera, still camera, and lighting tools to document field and laboratory work.

Understand and generally interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, and specifications under supervision.

Read, interpret, and execute industry standard test procedures (ASTM, AAMA, etc.) under supervision.

Produce high-quality work product that is detailed, thorough, complete, and accurate.

Additional Skills (preferred, but not required)

Operate scissor lift and forklift in laboratory.

Perform basic metal working and welding tasks.

Drafting Skills (preferred, but not required)

Have experience in one or more of the following drafting applications: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit

Be technically competent to develop skills in other drafting applications.

Prepare details, drawing sets, models, etc. under direct supervision.

Assist in updating AutoCAD standards at RRJ.

Testing Services

Assist in preparation of test specimens, setting up equipment, construction of test assemblies, and performing tests.

Perform on-site field and laboratory testing in a methodical manner under supervision. Previous experience in field quality control testing (e.g., building enclosure testing), investigative programs (e.g., air and water leakage testing), and/or laboratory testing (e.g., material property evaluation and load testing) is beneficial.

Accurately record test data and observations.

Be technically competent and able to learn the uses, limitations, general maintenance, in-house calibration, and use requirements of RRJ’s equipment, including tools, instruments, data loggers, and data acquisition systems.

Check equipment after use by self and others and keep equipment for field and lab use in operating order.

Perform in-house calibration check on equipment under supervision and assist with preparing equipment for annual third-party calibration.

Field Services

Work at heights from ladders, fixed scaffolds, powered man-lifts, and suspended scaffoldings. Previous training is beneficial; however, training opportunities are offered by RRJ.

Observe and document construction and investigative activities in an organized and easy to follow method.

Write clear and concise field notes regarding conditions observed, as-built geometry, work performed, and equipment used.

Accurately document the condition of artifacts, test specimens, existing construction, and equipment using sketches, photographs, and text.

General Maintenance Tasks

Maintain RRJ lab spaces including organizing, cleaning, and storing tools, equipment, and artifacts.

Maintain RRJ vehicle(s), including loading and unloading equipment, cleaning, and assistance in facilitating all necessary maintenance and servicing (e.g., vehicle drop off).

Assist in periodic maintenance of RRJ office spaces (e.g., cleaning, taking out garbage, changing light bults, and moving furniture).

Additional Expectations

Communicate regularly with project managers and other senior staff members.

Use time efficiently in the laboratory and in the field.

Adjust to changes in work situation, new people, ideas, and procedures.

Provide a professional demeanor to clients and associates and takes advantage of opportunities to promote RRJ.

Use non-billable time constructively to improve skills or assist with RRJ tasks.

Present thoughtful ideas for improving the operation of RRJ.

Participate in learning opportunities.

Resolve conflicts with co-workers in a constructive manner.

Observe office policies and procedures such as those regarding timesheets and expense reports, scheduling, equipment check out, general conduct, dress code, and computer use.
