Job Description:
It is the responsibility of the Dermatology Veterinary Assistant (DVA) to maintain the communication lines between doctor and client, provide daily financial and medical updates on all in-hospital patients, and handle client phone calls and questions within the dermatology department. A DVA must also manage the doctor's appointments, prepare an invoice, and schedule doctor's procedures. A DVA must also give responsible and compassionate care to all GCVS patients. They are responsible for monitoring and treating patients, keeping detailed records for in or out patients when needed and preparing procedures when needed. A DVA must have good communication skills with the doctors and other DVAs in order to perform the work as delegated and produce quality results. Client communication skills are paramount. A DVA must be willing to go the extra mile for the clients, and have a "Can Do" attitude. This position requires a dependable, high energy person who can handle multiple tasks at one time as well as a moderate stress, fast paced environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Discharge patients
  • Educate Clients about medications and care at home
  • Provide Financial Estimates
  • Inform Client about Payment Methods
  • Invoice all patient services
  • Put Client and Patient into the Exam Room
  • Obtain Weight on Patient
  • Provide Doctor with all pertinent Medical History
  • Generate and Explain Financial Estimate
  • Admit Patient into Hospital when necessary
  • Fill Prescriptions if needed
  • Get permission from clients for diagnostics or procedures when requested
  • Return Client Calls in order of priority
  • Relay messages and lab results to Doctor
  • Call Clients back with Doctor's response
  • Call Pharmacies with prescriptions if needed
  • Handle "Cold Calls" with Estimates for potential New Patients
  • Contact Referring Veterinarian's office
  • Stocking and cleaning in all common areas
  • Assisting with laundry, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping, etc. as needed
  • Disinfecting all equipment after each patient
  • Collection of samples for lab submission
  • Submitting, running, reviewing and interpreting lab tests and cytologies
  • Placing IV catheters
  • Administering medications
  • Inducing, maintaining, and recovering patients from anesthesia
  • Assisting in procedures such as CT, ear washes, allergy testing, biopsies, laser procedures, etc.
  • Attend all mandatory Staff meetings and Staff training

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma is required, Associate's degree (A. A.) or Bachelors is preferred; or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education / experience.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a surgical or specialty veterinary setting is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-year experience in general or specialty veterinary service.
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical skills are essential, including:
    • Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
    • Intubation/Extubation experience
    • Surgical preparation and assistance
    • Proficiency in diagnostic imaging and laboratory procedures
  • Experience handling and processing surgical instruments, including specialized equipment
  • Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.
  • Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills and problem-solving methods.
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus!
