What is a venture backed startup?

A venture backed startup is a new business that has received funding from venture capital investors to help it grow rapidly. These startups typically have innovative ideas or technologies and aim to scale quickly, often in competitive markets. Venture capitalists provide not only capital, but also mentorship, industry connections, and strategic guidance. In exchange for their investment, they usually receive equity in the company. This funding model is common in technology, biotech, and other high-growth industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a venture backed startup founder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a venture-backed startup founder, you need strong business acumen, strategic vision, and experience in entrepreneurship or relevant industry domains, often supported by a track record of leadership or startup involvement. Familiarity with fundraising platforms, financial modeling tools, and CRM systems is highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, resilience, adaptability, and the ability to inspire and lead teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable founders to attract investment, build scalable businesses, and navigate the complex challenges of rapid growth and competition.

What are the main challenges of working at a venture backed startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a venture-backed startup often means operating in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where priorities can shift quickly. You may be expected to take on a variety of responsibilities outside your initial job description, and resources can be limited as the company scales. To thrive, it's important to be adaptable, proactive, and comfortable with ambiguity. Building strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate across departments will help you contribute effectively and grow with the company.

Job description

About CoverRight

CoverRight is an insurance technology (‘insurtech’) startup on a mission to make Medicare more accessible to the 60 million Medicare beneficiaries across the country. We help the 10,000 people retiring every day make one the most complex but important decisions as they age into retirement – finding the right health insurance.

We're backed by reputable venture capital investors and have assembled a passionate and driven team to tackle an industry long overlooked by technology. Our mission is to become the most trusted partner in navigating the early-stages of retirement.

Our team is tight-knit, scrappy, and adaptable. We move fast, take risks, and get things done. And, most importantly, we care deeply about each other and our customers.

We have aggressive goals as we accelerate growth and are looking to bring on new team members who are able to move mountains to ‘get things done’.

About the Sales Agent role

We are looking for a licensed independent health insurance agents with AHIP certification & current health insurance license (required) to join our sales team at the ground floor.

If you have a desire to help seniors and a hunger and ambition to work and grow with a hyper-growth startup, this role is perfect for you. This role will give the agent the opportunity to accelerate their career as our business goes from strength to strength.

What makes this role special is you’ll be joining a small team at the ground-level with a ambitious mission to redefine the Medicare selection and enrollment experience with technology.

In order to succeed at this role, you must have high autonomy and the ability to drive outcomes through your own desire to achieve success.

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Enjoy the energy of a start-up and want first-hand experience working at an ambitious startup looking to make a difference
  • Love working in a fast-paced environment and thrive on autonomy
  • Desire a flat structure and direct day-to-day access to senior leadership
  • Are ambitious and not afraid to take on ‘non-traditional’ tasks in order to help scale and grow our business
  • Like meritocracy - we promote based on performance, not tenure

In this role, you will...

  • Use a consultative sales approach to guide customers through the application process
  • Demystify the industry jargon and make Medicare easy to understand
  • Work closely with CoverRight’s Co-founders and have the opportunity to have a hands-on approach in setting up the company’s sales function at it scales
  • Collaborate with technology and other teams to ensure both a seamless customer experience and improve our agent-facing technology
  • Continuously improve your performance in a metrics-driven environment, directly impacting your earnings

Apply if you have:

  • 2-3 years of Medicare (Medicare Advantage, Medigap, PDP) sales experience
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred)
  • Current AHIP certification
  • State licenses (ideally at least 10 from this list or can quickly obtain) in: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MA, ME, MI, MO, MS, NE, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV
  • History of compliant insurance sales practices

Benefits:

  • High commissions and production bonuses
  • Opportunity to accelerate career trajectory in a fast-growth start-up
  • Sell the best, national Medicare Advantage / Medigap carriers such as UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, Anthem, Wellcare, Cigna and more
  • Potential to be remote - sell from the comfort of home

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Permanent

Benefits:

  • Health insurance
  • Work from home
