What are some common challenges Vehicle Calibration Engineers face when working with new vehicle models?

Vehicle Calibration Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new hardware or software components, meeting evolving emissions and fuel efficiency standards, and ensuring compatibility across various vehicle systems. Working with new models frequently requires extensive testing and iterative tuning to optimize performance, drivability, and compliance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including software developers and mechanical engineers, is essential to troubleshoot issues and implement effective calibration solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vehicle Calibration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vehicle Calibration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with engine management systems. Familiarity with calibration software (such as ETAS INCA), data acquisition tools, and industry certifications like ASE or relevant OEM training is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this position. These skills ensure precise vehicle performance tuning, regulatory compliance, and successful cross-functional collaboration within engineering teams.

What does a Vehicle Calibration Engineer do?

A Vehicle Calibration Engineer is responsible for optimizing and fine-tuning the electronic control systems in vehicles, such as engines, transmissions, and emissions systems. They use specialized software and testing equipment to adjust parameters so the vehicle meets performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions standards. Their role often involves working with prototype vehicles, analyzing data, and collaborating with other engineers to ensure the best possible driving experience and regulatory compliance.

What is the difference between Vehicle Calibration Engineer vs Automotive Test Engineer?

AspectVehicle Calibration EngineerAutomotive Test Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering; certifications in calibration or testingBachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering; certifications in testing or quality assurance
Work EnvironmentDesigning and tuning vehicle systems, calibration labs, manufacturing plantsTesting vehicles on tracks, labs, or proving grounds, analyzing performance data
Industry UsageAutomotive manufacturing, vehicle development, emissions testingVehicle development, quality assurance, performance validation

Both roles require engineering backgrounds and industry-specific certifications. Vehicle Calibration Engineers focus on tuning vehicle systems for optimal performance and compliance, while Automotive Test Engineers evaluate vehicle performance through testing and data analysis. They often collaborate but serve different stages of vehicle development.

Job Description
Welcome to the new era of ELECTRIFICATION!
Our vision is a world with ZERO Crashes, ZERO Emissions, and ZERO Congestion. We embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer, and more equitable for all. We are going to ELECTRIFY the WORLD with exciting new products beyond the vehicle!
The Electrification Solutions New Markets (ESNM) organization within Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) has an opening for a Calibration Engineer. ESNM operates as a start-up within VMEC, focused on delivering battery-management solutions for non-automotive applications and unique automotive products. In this role, you will directly support GM's strategy to expand into emerging markets such as autonomous manufacturing, mobile power generation systems, stationary energy storage systems, specialty vehicles, watercraft, and locomotives.
We are looking for creative, highly motivated, agile thinkers with a passion for embedded controls and a strong attention to detail. Ideal candidates enjoy solving complex problems with data-driven rigor and thrive in a dynamic fast-moving environment where collaboration and continuous improvement are central to how we deliver.
Role Summary:
As a Calibration Engineer, you will play a critical role in defining, developing, and continuously improving calibrations for control strategies, diagnostics, and controller communication. In this role, you will turn advanced designs into robust, production-ready calibrations using data from simulation, lab, and physical hardware environments. You will partner with software team, testing and validation team, and system safety on various battery management system features, ensuring that software behaves safely, intuitively, and consistently for customers.
Additional Job Description:
As a Calibration Engineer in VMEC Electrification New Markets, your main responsibilities will include:
  • Diagnose and correct platform (hardware, HIL/SIL), system, and controls deficiencies
  • Support resolution of platform, plant, lab, and customer issues
  • Use analytical, scripting, and automation tools to develop and verify calibrations
  • Develop, maintain, and follow calibration procedures and execution guides
  • Participate in agile development teams and support algorithm development
  • Deliver calibrations to the appropriate repository according to program milestones
  • Identify software or controls deficiencies and submit issues through PRTS (Problem Tracking Resolution System) as appropriate
  • Validate diagnostic performance and robustness across SIL, HIL/ChIL, battery lab, and physical hardware environments to minimize false alarms while protecting safety and hardware.
  • Manage calibration content through GM's calibration tools and workflows (change management, reviews, and release processes) to ensure traceable, high-quality software deliveries.
  • Generate requests for software and/or controls changes
  • Create scripts as needed to verify calibration quality and accuracy

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in automotive controls, diagnostics, or calibration; EV / high-voltage battery experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven expertise with embedded controls and diagnostics for powertrain or EV systems (battery, inverter, charging, or related safety-critical domains).
  • Hands-on experience with calibration and data tools (e.g., ETAS INCA, MDA, Vehicle Spy, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar) and calibration change-management workflows/tools.
  • Experience reading and debugging source code in C/C++/Python languages.
  • Familiarity with automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet, SPI).
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex data, define calibration strategies, and deliver robust solutions.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Master's degree in relevant engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in electrification controls and diagnostics in areas such as battery management systems, energy transfer, AC/DC charging, high voltage contactor controls, power allocation, and wireless battery communication
  • Demonstrated impact in process improvement or method development (e.g., new robustness methods, automation scripts, or tools) within a calibration or diagnostics team.
  • Familiarity with virtual and lab-based calibration methods (e.g. SIL, HIL/ChIL).
  • Experience with GM calibration standard work (CalCheck, CEGs, JFTs) or Jira.
  • Experience with Scaled Agile or Agile
  • Understanding of GM Vehicle Development Process
  • DFSS Green or Black Belt
