What does a transmission calibration engineer do?

A Transmission Calibration Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, and optimizing the software and control systems that manage how a vehicle’s transmission operates. They ensure smooth gear shifts, optimal performance, fuel efficiency, and compliance with emissions standards. This role involves using diagnostic tools, conducting vehicle tests, and working closely with other engineers to refine transmission behavior for different driving conditions. Transmission Calibration Engineers play a critical role in ensuring a vehicle delivers a balanced and reliable driving experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transmission calibration engineer?

To thrive as a Transmission Calibration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, with expertise in powertrain systems and vehicle dynamics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Experience with calibration tools like ETAS INCA, MATLAB/Simulink, and familiarity with transmission control units (TCUs) are essential, as well as knowledge of OBD and CAN communication protocols. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for optimizing transmission performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering a smooth driving experience.

What are some common challenges transmission calibration engineers face when optimizing vehicle performance?

Transmission Calibration Engineers often encounter the challenge of balancing smooth drivability with fuel efficiency and emission standards. They work with large datasets and must fine-tune software parameters to address conflicting requirements from different markets or driving conditions. Close collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as software developers, test engineers, and powertrain specialists, is essential to resolve issues quickly and ensure seamless integration of transmission systems. Staying up-to-date with evolving automotive technologies and regulatory changes is also a key part of the role.

What is the difference between Transmission Calibration Engineer vs Transmission Test Engineer?

AspectTransmission Calibration EngineerTransmission Test Engineer
Primary FocusCalibrating and optimizing transmission systems for performance and efficiencyTesting transmission systems to verify functionality and durability
Required SkillsKnowledge of calibration tools, transmission systems, and vehicle electronicsExperience with testing procedures, diagnostic tools, and data analysis
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, calibration facilities, automotive industryTesting labs, quality assurance departments, automotive manufacturing

While both roles involve working with transmission systems, the Transmission Calibration Engineer focuses on fine-tuning and optimizing transmission performance, whereas the Transmission Test Engineer concentrates on testing and validating transmission systems' functionality and durability. Both roles require technical skills related to transmission technology and are essential in automotive development and quality assurance.

Job description

Senior Transmission Shift Quality Calibration Engineer

As a Senior Transmission Shift Quality Calibration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, calibrating, and validating transmission shift quality characteristics for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles in the North American market. This role focuses on delivering best-in-class shift performance through objective measurements, subjective evaluations, customer feedback analysis, and competitive benchmarking.

The engineer will lead transmission shift quality target definition, calibration development, quality investigations, and validation activities across automatic, dual-clutch, hybrid-electric, and electrified powertrain applications. The position requires extensive collaboration with controls development, vehicle integration, testing, and quality teams to ensure production-ready calibrations achieve customer satisfaction and brand-specific driving character targets.

What You Will Do
  • Develop and optimize transmission shift quality calibrations for automatic, DCT, and CVT transmissions
  • Define and maintain shift quality performance targets, vehicle character profiles, and transmission behavior requirements for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis products.
  • Conduct subjective and objective evaluations of shift quality, including shift feel, responsiveness, smoothness, shock, consistency for various shift classes
  • Lead on-road and proving ground calibration activities to validate shift quality performance under various operating conditions.
  • Develop shift quality targets using customer feedback, competitive benchmarking, J.D. Power data, warranty information, and third-party media reviews.
  • Analyze vehicle test data using INCA, MDA, MATLAB, AVL DRIVE, and other calibration and data analysis tools.
  • Perform root cause analysis and develop countermeasures for transmission quality issues identified during development, validation, launch, and production.
  • Collaborate with transmission controls, software development teams and transmission Tier2 vendors to improve shift strategies and control logic.
  • Support transmission calibration release activities and ensure compliance with internal ROM and software release processes.
  • Track calibration revisions, software releases, issue status, and validation results using AVL CRETA or equivalent calibration management systems.
  • Develop test procedures, calibration guidelines, shift quality evaluation methods, and objective measurement standards.
  • Investigate field quality concerns and customer feedback related to transmission operation and shift performance.
  • Conduct transmission validation events, including proving ground testing, public-road evaluations, hot and cold weather testing, high-altitude testing, and quality audits at production plants
  • Ensure all shift quality calibration activities meet internal quality standards and development milestones.
