Job description

Overview

CVP is seeking Sterile Processing Technicians to join our team in providing our Nation's Veterans with Sterile Processing Services at the VA New Jersey Healthcare System, East Orange Campus, located at 385 Tremont Avenue, East Orange, NJ 07018.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties related to the decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of reusable medical equipment (RME) in accordance with established VA and industry standards.
  • Perform all sterilization and High-Level Disinfection (HLD) processes, including Steam, Sterrad, VPRO, Medivator, Trophon, Cidex OPA, and other applicable modalities.
  • Clean, inspect, assemble, and store surgical instruments and reusable medical devices (RMD) in accordance with manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs) and facility protocols.
  • Identify and replace damaged instruments as needed to maintain inventory integrity and patient safety.
  • Conduct biological and chemical testing, Bowie-Dick tests, and quality assurance (QA) documentation in accordance with established sterilization protocols.
  • Support a wide range of surgical specialties, including but not limited to General, GYN, Orthopedics, ENT, Urology, Vascular, Dental, Robotics, Podiatry, and other applicable service lines.
  • Handle flexible endoscopes and follow manufacturer IFUs for reprocessing and storage.
  • Utilize the Instrument Tracking System (Censitrac) to input workload data and capture instrument tracking information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings as required by the VAMC Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.
  • Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care, and report incidents to the COR using the Patient Safety Reporting System as required.
  • Complete all VA Talent Management System (TMS) mandatory training modules before the end of each fiscal year, and attend a minimum of 12 unit-level in-service trainings per year.
  • Sign in and out via Outlook and timesheets within 10 minutes of arrival or departure, and maintain accurate records of cases performed daily.
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality for all patients, families, medical records, and electronic information in accordance with HIPAA, the Privacy Act, and all applicable VA policies and regulations.
  • Perform physical tasks including lifting, standing for extended periods, and pushing carts as required by the demands of the SPS environment.
  • Work in hot, humid, and loud environments while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with OSHA standards.
Qualifications
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust government security clearance. US Citizenship is required.
  • Must meet one of the following certification or experience criteria:
    • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certified through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA);
    • Graduate of a recognized CRCST or sterile processing technician program with a minimum of 2 years of SPS experience;
    • VA Level 1 Certification with a minimum of 2 years of SPS experience (VA Level 1 Certification must be completed within 90 days of start date if not already obtained);ย 
    • Minimum of 5 years of verifiable, hands-on SPS experience (non-certified candidates will be considered)
  • In-depth knowledge of infection control procedures and aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Practical knowledge of microbiology principles as they apply to surgical supply operations, including the resistance of microorganisms to heat and chemical sterilization agents.
  • Working knowledge of standard steam autoclaving procedures, including biological testing, chemical indicators, Bowie-Dick test interpretation, and proper recording of sterilization results.
  • Working knowledge of chemical sterilization procedures, including Sterrad and other applicable systems.
  • Competence with decontamination, sterilization, and inventory tracking equipment, including Censitrac or comparable instrument tracking systems.
  • Knowledge of PPE requirements, OSHA standards, and biological testing protocols.
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.ย 

Preferred Qualificationsย 

  • Prior experience working in a VA or federal healthcare SPS environment.
  • Familiarity with VHA Directives and policies governing sterile processing and reusable medical equipment.
  • Experience supporting a broad range of surgical specialties including robotic-assisted surgery platforms.

Location

VA New Jersey Healthcare System, East Orange Campus, 385 Tremont Avenue, East Orange, NJ 07018. This is an on-site position.
