What is a UX research internship?

A UX Research Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work within a company's user experience (UX) team to gain hands-on experience in researching users' needs, behaviors, and motivations. Interns typically assist with designing and conducting user interviews, surveys, usability tests, and analyzing data to help improve digital products. This role offers valuable exposure to real-world UX research methods, collaboration with designers and product teams, and opportunities to build a portfolio. Internships can last from a few months to a year and often serve as a pathway to full-time roles in UX research.

What do UX research interns do?

As a UX Research Intern, you'll typically support senior researchers by assisting with user interviews, usability testing, and data analysis. You may help design surveys, recruit participants, and synthesize findings into actionable insights for product teams. Expect to collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and engineers, gaining exposure to the full product development cycle. Interns often contribute to both ongoing and short-term research projects, which provides a great opportunity to build practical skills and a professional portfolio.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a UX research internship?

To thrive as a UX Research Intern, a foundational understanding of user-centered design principles, research methodologies, and a relevant academic background (such as psychology, HCI, or design) are essential.
