Job description

Job Title: Senior Construction InspectorJob Description

The Senior Construction Inspector supports the Transportation Department by leading and coordinating inspection activities on roadway, bridge, drainage, and utility construction projects. This role works closely with a team of inspectors and the Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) Supervisor to ensure that concrete, asphalt, earthwork, traffic control, and Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) work complies with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate a team of construction inspectors on transportation projects, including roadways, bridges, drainage structures, and utilities.
  • Perform detailed inspection services for concrete, asphalt, earthwork, traffic control, and Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) to verify compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Monitor roadway and bridge construction activities to ensure quality workmanship, proper materials, and adherence to civil engineering design requirements.
  • Inspect site construction and environmental field activities to confirm that erosion and sediment control measures are correctly installed and maintained.
  • Use inspection equipment and tools to measure, test, and document construction work, including materials, compaction, and placement.
  • Verify that traffic control and work zone safety measures are properly implemented and maintained throughout construction operations.
  • Collaborate with the CEI Supervisor, project managers, and construction management teams to communicate findings, resolve issues, and support project delivery.
  • Prepare clear, accurate inspection reports, logs, and documentation for roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Support project management activities by providing timely updates on construction progress, quality concerns, and safety observations.
  • Promote and enforce construction safety practices on site, helping to maintain a safe working environment for all personnel.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working on roadway and bridge construction projects.
  • Strong background in construction inspection for transportation projects, including highways, roadways, and bridge construction.
  • Hands-on experience with concrete, asphalt, earthwork, traffic control, and erosion and sediment control on civil construction sites.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles as they apply to roadway, bridge, and site construction.
  • Ability to use inspection equipment and tools to assess construction quality and compliance.
  • Experience in construction management or working closely with construction management teams on transportation projects.
  • Solid understanding of safety practices and work zone traffic control requirements on highway and roadway construction sites.
  • Ability to prepare clear, detailed inspection reports and communicate findings effectively to project stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in all aspects of construction inspection.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 10-hour OSHA Construction Safety & Health certification is a plus.
  • Nuclear Gauge Technician certification is a plus.
  • TDOT/ACI Concrete Technician certification is a plus.
  • Asphalt Roadway or Plant Technician certification is a plus.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control/Flagging certification is a plus.
  • Experience in environmental field work related to erosion prevention and sediment control is beneficial.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role with daily work performed on active construction sites for roadways, highways, bridges, and related civil infrastructure. The position requires regular travel to project locations within the transportation network, standing and walking for extended periods, and using inspection equipment on site.
