Job description


Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, a generation and transmission utility serving central and western Kansas, is seeking a Substation Technician Apprentice-Journey to join our Great Bend, KS crew. In this role, you'll support substations throughout the Medicine Lodge, Pratt, and Harper areas while building your skills in a safety-first environment that values career growth and continuous learning. Enjoy hands-on outdoor work inspecting, installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing substation equipment.
What You'll Do:
  • Assist with the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electric transmission and distribution substation equipment.
  • Become familiar with power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and various electrical and electronic systems with most duties involving working with circuits between 48 and 600 volts.
  • Work alongside a skilled and collaborative crew while gaining experience through our Apprenticeship program, designed to help build your technical expertise from the ground up.
  • Be supported in a safety-conscious culture with training, tools, and PPE to prioritize your well-being on the job.

Qualifications
Apprentice Qualifications:
  • Two year post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year control circuit wiring and installation experience is preferred.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within two years of date of hire.

Journey Qualifications:
  • Two years post high school technical certification in industrial electrical, instrument and control, or electronics and four years electric utility substation experience with increasingly responsible duties related to the installation and maintenance of substation equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a recognized substation apprenticeship program is preferred.
  • May be required to possess and maintain a commercial driver's license (CDL).
