Job description

Description The Apprentice Lineman position participates in a structured four-year apprenticeship program with the Electric Department. The apprentice is required to maintain at least 90% attendance at all scheduled weekly training classes and perform assigned work under the direct supervision of experienced linemen in a team-based environment. This position assists with electric utility operations while learning the proper use, care, and safety procedures for all department equipment.

Upon satisfactory completion of the apprenticeship program, the employee will be evaluated for consideration of advancement to Electrical Journeyman Lineman. Examples of Duties Assists journeymen in maintaining utility system. Attends all scheduled training and apprenticeship classes.

Learns proper use of all equipment, tools material and other devices. Maintains all records and paperwork for position. Scheduled for on-call rotation.

Typical Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with City employees, officials and general public. Must be willing to commit to four (4) years training program and obtain CDL driver's license within 6 months.

Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. Valid Kansas driver's license required. Any other electric related experience will be considered by employer.

Supplemental Information Environment: Works in all types of weather conditions. Majority of work is performed outdoors: Extreme, moderate and temperate cold and heat; hail, snow, high & gusty winds, rain, sleet, and dust. Surfaces: Asphalt, concrete, dirt, mud, sand, ice, grass, slick and gravel.

Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis, climb ladders, shovel, stretch, bend, pull, push, kneel, reach, walk, carry, sit, stand, hear, see, operate equipment.
