Job description

Are you passionate about helping orthopaedic patients? Do you want to be part of the largest orthopaedic provider in Eastern Tennessee? Join the KOC team on site at KOC at UT Medical Center, the Region's only Academic and Level 1 Trauma Center. This role will support the Orthopedic Institute, one of UT Medical Center's 9 Centers of Excellence, through a long-standing partnership with KOC providers. We are currently seeking a full-time Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) who is committed to providing superior service and eager to grow within a highly respected orthopaedic practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Must meet on-call response time or stay close by.

  • Assist in highly specialized ortho surgical procedures including ortho trauma at a Level 1 trauma center.

  • Work closely with surgeons to optimize patient outcomes.

  • Plans, sets up, performs, and cleans up the assigned surgical procedure as a surgical first assistant and/or as a scrub tech; demonstrates knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to case; safely operates special equipment which may be used in surgical cases (e.g. tourniquets, drills, saws, etc.); maintains instrument and equipment integrity, as well as point-of-use techniques; performs room turn-over and terminal cleaning; utilizes supplies appropriately and in a cost effective manner. When called upon can assist in daily assignments; makes sure all needed supplies/implants are available for assigned case(s); brings to the coordinator the changes that need to be made to the preference card.

  • Assists the operating room team in safely transferring the patient to and from the Operating Table; demonstrates proper positioning techniques, knows the proper position for cases and understands the use of proper positioning aids to protect nerves, bony prominences and to maintain circulation.

  • You will be assisting with skin preparation, and surgical draping according to the surgeon's protocol.

  • Provide visualization of the operative site including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.

  • Closure of skin planes and proper dressing placement including splints and immobilizers.

  • Obtain diagnostic studies for reference.

  • Call is required - week nights, weekends, and holiday call as a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) (CST)- Must be certified by NBSTSA

  • Must have attended a CAAHEP accredited surgical technologist and assisting program

  • 1+ years of surgical experience in assisting

  • Experience in ortho preferred

  • BLS certification

  • Ability to obtain Tennessee State License upon hire & Hospital Credentialing
