What is user experience testing?

User experience (UX) testing is the process of evaluating a product, such as a website or app, by observing how real users interact with it. The goal is to identify any usability issues, gather feedback, and improve the overall experience for users. UX testing can involve methods like usability tests, A/B testing, and surveys to understand how intuitive and enjoyable the product is. By regularly conducting UX testing, companies can create products that are easier to use and more satisfying for their target audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a User Experience (UX) Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience (UX) Tester, you need a solid understanding of usability principles, research methodologies, and experience with user testing processes, often supported by a degree in human-computer interaction, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with prototyping tools (like Figma or Sketch), analytics platforms (such as Google Analytics), and usability testing software (like UserTesting or Lookback) is typically required. Excellent observational skills, empathy, clear communication, and attention to detail help UX testers accurately interpret user feedback and convey actionable insights. These skills ensure that digital products are intuitive, user-centered, and meet both business and customer needs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in User Experience Testing, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in User Experience (UX) Testing is ensuring that test participants accurately represent the target user base, which can impact the validity of findings. Another challenge is balancing stakeholder expectations with user feedback, especially when business goals and user needs differ. Additionally, coordinating with designers, product managers, and developers to implement necessary changes based on test results can be complex. Building strong communication skills, advocating for the user perspective, and maintaining well-documented testing processes can help address these challenges.

What is the difference between User Experience Testing vs User Interface Design?

AspectUser Experience TestingUser Interface Design
Primary FocusEvaluating usability and user satisfactionCreating visual and interactive elements of a product
Required SkillsUsability testing, user research, analytical skillsDesign tools, visual design, prototyping
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, remote testing, user feedback sessionsDesign studios, collaborative teams, digital platforms
Common CertificationsUX certifications, usability certificationsUI/UX design certifications, Adobe, Figma skills

While User Experience Testing focuses on assessing and improving the usability of a product through testing and research, User Interface Design involves creating the visual and interactive elements that users engage with. Both roles are essential in the product development process but serve different purposes to enhance overall user satisfaction.

Job description

Company Description
Privia Health™ is a technology-driven, national physician enablement company that collaborates with medical groups, health plans, and health systems to optimize physician practices, improve patient experiences, and reward doctors for delivering high-value care in both in-person and virtual settings. The Privia Platform is led by top industry talent and exceptional physician leadership, and consists of scalable operations and end-to-end, cloud-based technology that reduces unnecessary healthcare costs, achieves better outcomes, and improves the health of patients and the well-being of providers.
Job Description
The UX / QA Engineer is a unique, hybrid quality champion who sits at the intersection of product design, engineering, and quality assurance. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that our patient- and provider-facing digital products (myPrivia, Online Scheduling, Privia Insights, and automated notification systems) are functionally bulletproof and deliver an elite, seamless user experience.
You will collaborate closely with Product Owners and Web and Mobile Engineers to define and maintain strict usability and functional quality standards. Rather than just testing back-end logic, you will actively defend the end-user experience-ensuring that design systems, responsive behaviors, layout integrity, and complex user flows (such as virtual clinic check-ins and automated text/email loops) behave exactly as intended across all devices and platforms.
We are looking for an engineer who embraces modern QA practices, including leveraging AI-assisted tools to rapidly generate test cases, write automated UI scripts, and analyze behavioral patterns.
Primary Job Duties:
  • UX/UI Verification & Design QA: Validate user interfaces, responsive layouts, style guide compliance, and interactive components against design mockups and usability standards to catch drift before production.
  • End-to-End Functional Testing: Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test scripts covering usability, functional, compatibility, and performance testing for web and mobile interfaces.
  • Journey Validation: Deeply test complex patient and provider journeys across our integrated ecosystem, ensuring workflows involving web applications, mobile applications, and outbound messaging (email, sms, push) are flawless.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Review logs, browser consoles, network tabs, and error tracking tools (e.g., Bugsnag) to pinpoint whether a defect is a UI rendering flaw, an API integration error, or a functional regression.
  • AI-Augmented QA Testing: Utilize AI testing assistants and automated tools to draft test plans, accelerate automated UI regression scripting (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium), and optimize test coverage.
  • Defect Lifecycle Management: Identify, document, and track visual and functional defects in Jira with reproducible steps, screen recordings, and technical context for engineering teams.
  • Agile Collaboration: Participate in all Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives) to advocate fiercely for both software quality and user experience.

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in software quality assurance, software engineering, or user experience testing.
  • Strong UX/UI Sensitivity: Proven track record of verifying web and mobile application interfaces against high-fidelity designs, with an eye for layout, typography, responsiveness, and accessibility (WCAG).
  • Digital Product Exposure: Experience testing interactive, consumer-facing web apps, mobile apps (iOS & Android), or integrated communication workflows (SMS, email, push notifications).
  • Modern Testing Ecosystems: Practical experience using cross-browser testing suites, mobile device simulators, and frontend debugging tools (Chrome DevTools).
  • AI Developer/QA Tooling: Experience incorporating AI tools into your daily workflow to increase test generation speed and script efficiency.
  • Agile SDLC: Solid understanding of software development life cycles and experience operating within fast-paced Agile methodologies.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with test automation frameworks tailored for UI/UX validation (e.g., Cypress, Playwright, Appium).
  • Direct experience working with Figma or similar digital product design tools.
  • Experience testing workflows embedded inside EHR systems (specifically athenaOne).
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/CSS/JS to help diagnose frontend failures.

Additional Information
All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
The salary range for this role is $110,000.00 to $130,000.00 in base pay and exclusive of any bonuses or benefits (medical, dental, vision, life, and pet insurance, 401K, paid time off, and other wellness programs). This role is also eligible for an annual bonus targeted at 15% . The base pay offered will be determined based on relevant factors such as experience, education, and geographic location
Technical Requirements (for remote workers only, not applicable for onsite/in office work):
In order to successfully work remotely, supporting our patients and providers, we require a minimum of 5 MBPS for Download Speed and 3 MBPS for the Upload Speed. This should be acquired prior to the start of your employment. The best measure of your internet speed is to use online speed tests like https://www.speedtest.net/. This gives you an update as to how fast data transfer is with your internet connection and if it meets the minimum speed requirements. Work with your internet provider if you have questions about your connection. Employees who regularly work from home offices are eligible for expense reimbursement to offset this cost.
