Senior UX & Information Architect

Unbound

Job description

The role in one breath

After 45 years of walking with families out of poverty, we are expanding our reach, and we want far more people to be able to find us. We are looking for a Senior UX & Information Architect to own how people discover, navigate, and act on Unbound online, from the first search to a completed sponsorship. As search shifts toward AI-generated answers, you will keep Unbound visible, clear, and easy to say yes to.

Main areas of focus

Information architecture and findability. User experience and usability. Search across SEO and AI-driven search. Measurement and continuous improvement.

About Unbound

Unbound is an international nonprofit walking alongside families living in poverty across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. We do not work for people in poverty; we walk with them. We channel direct support to families and trust parents to know what their children need. Our core values- authenticity, transparency, dignity, solidarity, and walking with, not for- are how we make decisions, including hiring ones.

Why this role matters

Our sponsors stay: more than 91% renew year over year, well above the sector. The hard part is not keeping people; it is helping the right people find us and understand, quickly, what walking with a family really means. That is your work. The structure, the words, and the search strategy that turn a curious visitor into a lifelong sponsor.

What you will do

  • Own the information architecture of our web properties: structure, navigation, taxonomy, and content models that make the right thing easy to find.
  • Lead the user experience end to end, from research and wireframes to prototypes and tested, measurable improvements.
  • Ground your work in usability heuristics and real user testing, not assumptions.
  • Own our search strategy across technical and content SEO, structured data, and organic discovery.
  • Lead how we show up in AI-driven search, including AI Overviews, generative search, and answer engines, so Unbound stays visible and accurately represented.
  • Remove friction from the sponsorship and giving journeys, and prove the impact with analytics and A/B testing.
  • Leave content editors and channel teams a playbook so good information architecture, search, and accessibility hold up without you in the loop for every change.

What success looks like in the first year

  • You deliver a tested information architecture that measurably improves findability and shortens the path from arriving on the site to completing a sponsorship.
  • You set a usability and heuristic baseline for the primary sponsorship journeys, then ship and measure the first round of improvements against it.
  • You put a technical SEO and structured-data foundation in place, with Unbound content showing up accurately in AI-generated search results and organic discovery trending measurably up.
  • You leave the team a plain-language playbook so good structure, search, and accessibility keep holding without you in the loop for every change.

You are

A systems thinker with a designer's eye and a researcher's discipline. You are curious about how people search and decide, and genuinely energized by the way AI is changing both. You explain technical and structural ideas in plain language, you hold a high bar for craft, and you keep the person on the other side of the screen in mind. You are steady under competing deadlines and generous with what you know.

Bonus points

  • Experience in the nonprofit or mission-driven world.
  • A background in library or information science, or formal information architecture training.
  • Comfort collaborating closely with front-end developers. You do not need to code, but it helps to speak their language.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, or another relevant language.

This position is located in Kansas City, Kansas USA - Unbound does not sponsor applicants for work visas.
