What is a USCG officer and what do they do?

USCG stands for United States Coast Guard. USCG officers are members of a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces responsible for maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship. Their duties include search and rescue, law enforcement, maintaining navigational aids, and protecting U.S. waters from threats such as drug trafficking and illegal immigration. The Coast Guard also plays a key role in disaster response and port security. Service can involve both domestic and international assignments, often working closely with other military branches and federal agencies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a US Coast Guard member?

To thrive as a US Coast Guard (USCG) member, you need physical fitness, maritime skills, and a high school diploma or GED, with additional specialized training provided after enlistment. Familiarity with navigation systems, radio communication tools, and safety equipment is essential, and certifications like EMT or advanced seamanship can be advantageous. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and leadership under pressure are critical soft skills for excelling in dynamic and often hazardous environments. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring mission success, personal safety, and effective protection of lives, property, and the environment.

What are common challenges faced by US Coast Guard members during their daily duties?

USCG members often face unique challenges such as working in unpredictable weather conditions, responding to maritime emergencies, and balancing administrative tasks with operational duties. The dynamic nature of search and rescue missions, law enforcement operations, and environmental protection efforts can require quick decision-making and strong teamwork. Additionally, members may experience periods of deployment or extended duty hours, which can impact personal routines but also foster strong camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment.

Job description

Full-Time & Part-Time USCG Licensed Captain / Marine Operations Team Member

Boats and Fun – North Captiva Island, Florida

Love being on the water? Want more than just another captain job?

Boats and Fun is looking for an energetic, customer-focused USCG Licensed Captain to join our growing team. We currently have both Full-Time and Part-Time positions available, with year-round opportunities for the right candidate.

We are a family-owned business that has been serving Southwest Florida for nearly 20 years and has built one of the area’s strongest reputations for customer service. Every day is different—you might captain a private dolphin tour in the morning, help guests prepare for a boat rental, assist customers in our island store, or transport families to paradise aboard one of our water taxis.

If you’re looking for a position where you can stay busy, enjoy working with people, and be part of an amazing team, we’d love to hear from you.

Applicants without a valid USCG Captain’s License will not be considered.

What You’ll Do

Captain Duties

  • Operate Water Taxi service throughout Pine Island Sound
  • Captain private sightseeing and dolphin tours
  • Safely transport passengers, luggage, groceries, and supplies

  • Operate safely in changing weather and water conditions
  • Deliver exceptional customer service every trip

Our fleet includes Glacier Bay catamarans, deck boats, and other passenger vessels.

  • Teaching our boating orientation course
  • Training renters on boat operation and local waterways
  • Performing boat check-outs and inspections
  • Assisting with reservations
  • Answering customer questions
  • Helping with boat returns

Don’t worry—we’ll train you on our systems and boating course.

Store & Island Operations

You will also:

  • Assist customers in our island store
  • Rent golf carts, kayaks, bikes, paddleboards and beach equipment
  • Stock merchandise
  • Help keep the marina, boats, docks and store clean and organized
  • Load supplies and equipment
  • Support coworkers during busy days

We’re looking for someone who enjoys staying active and taking initiative—not someone who only wants to drive a boat.

Who We’re Looking For

Our ideal teammate is someone who is:

  • Friendly and outgoing
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Professional with customers
  • A safe and confident boat operator
  • Self-motivated
  • A team player
  • Willing to jump in wherever help is needed
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a fast-paced environment

  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (OUPV / 6-Pack minimum)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check and driving record check
  • Must participate in our USCG random drug testing program
  • Ability to lift 30–40 lbs regularly
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and flexible schedules

Local knowledge of Pine Island Sound, North Captiva, Captiva, Boca Grande and surrounding waters is a plus but not required.
