Responsibilities
USA Health is seeking an experienced physician leader to provide strategic leadership, administration, and oversight for the development, implementation, and successful accreditation of our new Anesthesiology Residency Program.
The Program Director will collaborate closely with the Department Chair, Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Graduate Medical Education Office, faculty, and institutional leadership to develop curriculum, recruit faculty and residents, establish educational infrastructure, and guide the residency program through the ACGME accreditation process while maintaining an active clinical anesthesiology practice.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of USA Health's Anesthesiology Residency Program.
  • Prepare and oversee the ACGME accreditation application and ongoing accreditation activities.
  • Develop curriculum, educational policies, resident evaluation processes, and faculty development initiatives.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate residents.
  • Lead Clinical Competency Committee, Program Evaluation Committee, Annual Program Evaluation, and Self-Study activities.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME Common Program Requirements, institutional GME policies, and ABA requirements.
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence, professionalism, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and resident wellness.
  • Maintain an active clinical anesthesiology practice while providing educational leadership.

Clinical Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive anesthesia services for surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures. Responsibilities include administering anesthetics and sedation, evaluating patients preoperatively to determine anesthetic risk and appropriate anesthetic plans, monitoring patients throughout procedures and recovery, managing acute and chronic pain, providing airway management and life support during emergencies, and collaborating with surgeons and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to deliver safe, high-quality patient care.
Additional responsibilities include supervising and educating residents, fellows, medical students, CRNAs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals as appropriate; participating in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives; maintaining accurate medical documentation; adhering to all institutional policies and regulatory requirements; participating in departmental call coverage; and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Candidates must possess:
  • MD or DO degree
  • Board Certification / Board Eligibility by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology (AOBA).
  • Eligibility for Alabama medical licensure

Program Director Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology (AOBA).
  • Eligibility for unrestricted Alabama medical licensure.
  • Current participation in MOCA 2.0 with continuous maintenance of certification.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of documented educational and/or administrative leadership experience acceptable to the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Demonstrated scholarly activity including publications, educational innovation, curriculum development, quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, book chapters, or other academic contributions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • The preferred candidate will have served in a formal Graduate Medical Education (GME) administrative leadership role as a Program Director or Associate Program Director.
  • Experience should include curriculum development, resident recruitment and selection, subspecialty rotation oversight, resident evaluation, Milestone documentation, Clinical Competency Committee participation, Annual Program Evaluation, and the institutional reporting processes that support ACGME accreditation.
  • Demonstrated experience with ACGME Common Program Requirements, residency accreditation, institutional reviews, and Self-Study preparation.
  • Working knowledge of National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) processes, duty-hour compliance, faculty development, and graduate medical education best practices.
  • Candidates with significant graduate medical education experience who have not previously served in a formal GME leadership role are encouraged to apply. Physicians with demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to graduate medical education will be considered, recognizing that transitioning into a founding Program Director role requires significant administrative responsibility and institutional support.
