What is a urology RN?

A Urology RN is a registered nurse who specializes in caring for patients with urological conditions, such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, incontinence, and prostate disorders. They assist with diagnostic procedures, educate patients on treatment options, and provide post-operative care. Urology RNs work in hospitals, clinics, and specialty practices, supporting both patients and physicians in maintaining urinary and reproductive health.

What does a urology RN do?

A typical day for a Urology RN involves assisting physicians with procedures such as catheterizations, cystoscopies, and patient assessments, as well as managing pre- and post-operative care. You will educate patients about treatment plans, medications, and self-care techniques, often addressing sensitive or personal concerns in a supportive manner. Collaboration with surgeons, other nurses, and multidisciplinary teams is common, ensuring comprehensive and seamless care for each patient. You may also review lab results, chart in EHR systems, and help coordinate follow-up appointments, making adaptability and organization essential skills in this role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a urology RN?

A Urology RN requires strong clinical nursing skills, in-depth knowledge of urinary and reproductive system disorders, a nursing degree, and an active RN license. Familiarity with urology-specific procedures, electronic health records (EHR), and specialized equipment such as catheters and bladder scanners is essential. Excellent communication, patient education abilities, and attention to detail help RNs support patients throughout sensitive treatments.
