These internships allow participants to gain practical skills, work on real projects, and learn from industry professionals. UPS internships are typically offered during the summer and may lead to future employment opportunities within the company. Interns benefit from mentorship, networking, and exposure to the logistics and supply chain industry.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can I expect as a UPS intern?

As a UPS intern, you can expect to work on meaningful projects that support your department’s goals, whether in logistics, engineering, IT, or business operations. Interns often assist with process improvement initiatives, data analysis, and team collaboration on active business challenges. You’ll typically be paired with mentors and work closely with experienced professionals, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. This exposure not only builds practical skills but also provides valuable insights into UPS's operations and culture, making it an excellent stepping stone for future career opportunities within the company.

Job description

Our Portland office is seeking a Building Science Consultant to join our Portland team. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional who is eager to develop their technical skills in building science and building enclosure consulting.
We are a multidisciplinary group of engineers and architects specializing in building enclosure design, investigation, and rehabilitation for both new and existing buildings. Junior staff work closely with senior consultants and project managers and receive hands-on training, mentoring, and structured professional development.
For new construction projects, we support the design and construction of durable, sustainable, and high-performance building envelopes. For existing buildings, we assist with investigating enclosure issues and designing repair strategies.
We value technical growth, curiosity, collaboration, work-life balance, and an environment that supports learning and mentorship. This is a full-time, entry-level to early-career position that offers exposure to a wide range of building science services.
Your Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance and supervision of senior staff, the junior consultant will:
  • Assist with project document reviews (drawings, specifications, shop drawings, submittals).
  • Participate in site visits and prepare site visit documentation and reports.
  • Support building envelope failure investigations and condition assessments.
  • Assist with field testing of enclosure performance (water leakage, air leakage, whole-building air testing, infrared thermography).
  • Support observation and documentation of project mock-ups.
  • Attend design and construction meetings and help document discussions and action items.
  • Assist with basic project coordination tasks.
  • Assist with technical report writing and data organization.
  • Provide drafting and design support for contract documents using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Participate in internal training and continuing education programs.
  • Work in a combination of office and field environments.

Qualifications
Your Qualifications
  • Foundational understanding of building science principles (air, thermal, moisture, and vapor control concepts).
  • Strong interest in building enclosure design and investigation.
  • Ability to manage tasks across multiple projects with guidance.
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in developing technical writing skills.
  • Professional attitude, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Construction site experience is an asset.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, drawings, and specifications is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and Revit.
  • Valid driver's license and clean DMV record.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Building Science OR 2+ years of relevant work experience.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience, including internships or co-op experience.
  • Coursework or internship exposure to building science or building enclosure concepts preferred

Work Environment
Office work includes regular use of computers and periods of sitting. Field work may include site visits and exposure to weather and active construction environments.
Pursuant to applicable Oregon law and the Portland City Code, qualified applicants with criminal histories will be considered in a manner consistent with fair chance hiring requirements.
