What is an Unreal Engine Level Artist?

Unreal Engine Level Artists are professionals who design, create, and assemble visually engaging environments and levels within the Unreal Engine, a popular game development platform. They work closely with other artists, designers, and programmers to build immersive worlds for video games or interactive experiences. Their responsibilities include creating 3D assets, placing objects, setting up lighting, optimizing performance, and ensuring the overall aesthetic matches the project's vision. Level artists must have strong artistic skills, technical knowledge of Unreal Engine, and a good understanding of gameplay flow and user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine Level Artist?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine Level Artist, you need a strong background in 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, and a solid understanding of level design principles, often supported by a degree in game design or a related field. Proficiency in Unreal Engine, 3D software like Blender or Maya, and experience with version control systems are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help level artists produce immersive, visually compelling environments that meet project goals. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, engaging game worlds that elevate the player experience.

How does an Unreal Engine Level Artist typically collaborate with game designers and other team members during a project?

As an Unreal Engine Level Artist, you'll work closely with game designers, environment artists, and technical artists to bring immersive game worlds to life. Collaboration often involves interpreting design documents, exchanging feedback on level layouts, and iterating on visual elements to ensure gameplay and aesthetics align. You'll frequently participate in team meetings, use version control systems to share assets, and address optimization or performance feedback from QA or engineering teams. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that levels are both visually stunning and play well within the game's mechanics.

What is the difference between Unreal Engine Level Artist vs Environment Artist?

While both roles involve environment creation, Unreal Engine Level Artists specialize in building and optimizing levels directly within Unreal Engine, focusing on gameplay and performance. Environment Artists often work on the broader design and modeling of environments, which may then be imported into Unreal Engine. The roles overlap in skills like Unreal Engine familiarity but differ in scope and focus.

Job description

At Imerza, we are a leading innovator in architectural visualization software, specializing in digital twins and real estate marketing. Our team blends cutting-edge technology with artistic craftsmanship to create immersive, real-time experiences that transform how properties are designed, presented, and sold.

We’re passionate about redefining what’s possible in real-time 3D, and we’re seeking a Senior Unreal Developer to lead technical innovation and elevate the quality, performance, and reliability of our visualization systems.

About the Role:
The Senior Unreal Developer plays a pivotal role in shaping Imerza’s Unreal Engine development pipeline and real-time visualization platform. You’ll lead efforts to build, optimize, and integrate advanced systems that power our architectural and experiential visualization projects.

This position combines technical mastery with leadership — you’ll work alongside engineers, artists, and project leads to define standards, mentor developers, and contribute to our next generation of real-time rendering and simulation systems.

What You’ll Do:
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced real-time systems in Unreal Engine 5.
  • Build and extend core runtime features including: Interactive cameras and slice-plane systems.
  • Dynamic lighting, time-of-day, and environmental effects.
  • UMG and in-engine tools for interaction and visualization control.
  • Drive large-scale scene optimization using Nanite, Lumen, World Partition, and PCG.
  • Develop reusable Unreal frameworks, documentation, and pipelines to improve efficiency and maintain consistency across teams.
  • Collaborate with engineers, artists, and producers to ensure seamless integration between systems and client-facing deliverables.
  • Troubleshoot performance, rendering, and system-level challenges with efficiency and precision.
  • Mentor mid-level and junior developers, fostering growth in Unreal best practices and creative problem solving.
  • Contribute to technical planning and help define the studio’s Unreal Engine roadmap.

What We’re Looking For:
  • 6+ years of professional experience developing in Unreal Engine (UE5 preferred).
  • Expert knowledge of C++ and Blueprints, Unreal Editor tools, and runtime system architecture.
  • Proven experience creating interactive features, procedural tools, and scalable systems.
  • Deep understanding of large environment workflows, dynamic lighting, and real-time rendering optimization.
  • Familiarity with Perforce, Git, or equivalent version control tools.
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
  • A proactive, collaborative leader with a track record of mentoring or leading technical teams.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging abilities across multidisciplinary projects.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with VR/XR systems or virtual production pipelines (nDisplay, LED walls).
  • Knowledge of Unreal networking/replication or database integration (MySQL).
  • Experience with Datasmith, CAD data, or architectural visualization workflows.
  • Familiarity with automation, Python, or build systems for Unreal projects.
  • Understanding of projection mapping or real-time performance environments.
Additional Requirements:
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • This position is based in Sarasota, FL. Candidates who can work onsite or relocate are preferred.
  • Exceptional remote candidates within the U.S. will also be considered.
