Job Description
Under the supervision of the Community Action Agency Program Director, or the director's designee, the Public Health Intern supports the planning, coordination, and evaluation of agency programs with an emphasis on data collection, analysis, and continuous quality improvement. The intern will assist in strengthening data systems, identifying gaps in data collection practices, and recommending strategies to enhance program effectiveness and community impact. This position provides hands-on experience in public health practice, program evaluation, and community-based services.
This position is for a part-time, unpaid internship, for Fall 2026. The position is scheduled to begin the week of August 31, 2026, and conclude on December 18, 2026. Work hours will be 10-15 hours per week. The individual's schedule will be determined, depending on the preferred candidate's availability. The internship location will be at the James Street Complex located at 12251 James St., Holland, MI.
Essential Job Functions
  • Assists with coordination and support of programmatic activities across OCCAA programs, including data tracking, reporting, and evaluation.
  • Supports the collection, entry, and analysis of program and customer service data to inform decision-making and improve outcomes.
  • Reviews current data collection processes and identifies opportunities for increased accuracy, efficiency, and consistency.
  • Develops recommendations and tools to improve data collection systems, including forms, workflows, and database use.
  • Assists in developing outcome measures and performance indicators aligned with Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) requirements.
  • Contributes to preparation of reports for internal use, funding sources, and community stakeholders.
  • Supports Community Needs Assessment activities through data gathering, organization, and analysis.
  • Collaborates with staff and community partners to better understand service gaps and underserved populations through data.
  • Assists in identifying trends and patterns in service delivery to inform outreach and program development strategies.
  • Maintains accurate and timely data entry in agency databases such as empowOR in accordance with policy guidelines.
  • Participates in team meetings and evaluation discussions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience
  • Current enrollment in or recent completion of a bachelor's or master's degree program in public health, health sciences, data analytics, or a related field.
  • Interest in public health practice, community-based services, and program evaluation.
  • Previous coursework or experience in data collection, research methods, or statistics preferred but not required.

Additional Requirements and Information
  • Basic understanding of public health principles and data-driven decision-making.
  • Familiarity with data collection methods, surveys, and/or program evaluation concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Computer literacy, including working knowledge of spreadsheets (Excel), databases, and word-processing software.
