Cedarville University invites applicants for the position of Groundskeeper. This is a full-time, non-exempt, on-site staff position in the University Grounds Department within the Business Division. This position reports to the Manager of University Grounds and is a 12-month position working 2,080 annual hours.
The Groundskeeper performs skilled and unskilled horticultural and landscape maintenance tasks to help create and maintain a beautiful, welcoming, and well-maintained campus environment. This position has been designated as emergency essential.
Essential Functions of the Position
  • Maintain landscaped areas across campus.
  • Plant and cultivate trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Spray for control of pests and plant diseases.
  • Mix and apply herbicides, fertilizers, and other chemicals to grass, shrubs, trees, and roadside right-of-way.
  • Operate hand tools such as edgers, blowers, weed eaters, and related equipment.
  • Operate power equipment including mowers, tractors, and other grounds equipment.
  • Prepare soils for various kinds of plantings.
  • Mow, rake, weed, seed, edge, and water lawns.
  • Trim and prune trees and shrubs.
  • Install drainage systems for runoff water in flower beds, lawns, roads, and parking lots.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and provide quality customer service.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Ornamental Horticulture preferred. Two years of experience in landscaping, hardscaping, or related work will meet this requirement.
  • Have or be willing to work toward obtaining a Commercial Applicator Pesticide License.
  • Complete required training procedures for all equipment and vehicles. Complete list of equipment and training approval maintained on file.
  • Skill in planting, cultivating, and maintaining trees, shrubs, and lawns.
  • Skill in working with materials.
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver license.

Required Mental/Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient physical ability to perform heavy manual labor such as installation of lawns and shoveling snow, including occasionally lifting 50-pound bags and pushing, pulling, or dragging items up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work on uneven surfaces and in all kinds of weather conditions with frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, chemicals, or hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and positively with faculty, staff, and students in writing, by telephone, email, radio, and in person.
  • Self-directed with a sincere desire to excel in the performance of duties.
