What is a Unity developer?

Unity Developers are professionals who use the Unity game engine to create interactive experiences, such as video games, simulations, and virtual or augmented reality applications. They write code, often in C#, to bring game mechanics, graphics, and user interfaces to life. Unity Developers collaborate with designers, artists, and other team members to build and optimize applications for various platforms, including mobile devices, consoles, and PCs. Their role involves both technical programming and creative problem-solving to ensure high-quality, engaging user experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Unity developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Unity Developer, you need strong proficiency in C# programming, a solid understanding of game development principles, and experience with the Unity engine, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with source control systems (like Git), versioning tools, and Unity-specific features such as the Asset Store and Unity Analytics is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help developers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and address complex challenges. These abilities are crucial for delivering polished, high-performing interactive experiences and meeting project goals in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges Unity developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Unity Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as optimizing game performance, managing complex codebases, and ensuring smooth collaboration between team members. Performance bottlenecks can arise from handling large assets or complex scenes, requiring careful profiling and optimization. Additionally, maintaining clean and modular code is crucial as multiple developers contribute to the same project, making version control and clear documentation essential. Regular communication with designers, artists, and other developers helps to align project goals and resolve issues quickly.

Sr. Software Engineer, Developer Platform

Dialpad

Vancouver, BC

Full-time

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

Your role
As a Sr. Software Engineer on the Developer Platform team, you will lead the design and development of the APIs, events, and frameworks that empower external developers to build integrations and plug-ins for Dialpad. This platform is central to scaling Dialpad's integration ecosystem, ensuring third-party developers have the robust tools they need to create seamless experiences for our customers. This includes backend public APIs, event frameworks, frontend plug-in frameworks, and client libraries.

You will own a set of core components within the Developer Platform team, translating developer workflows and business needs-identified in partnership with our technical product manager-into high-quality, scalable technical solutions. You will help shape the 6-12 month technical direction for the platform, break down complex requirements into clear, actionable deliverables, and solve technical challenges through shared tools and patterns.

You'll collaborate closely with engineering teammates, product leaders, and external developer stakeholders. You will be expected to operate with little guidance, make pragmatic business and technical trade-offs, and mentor other engineers through design, implementation, code review, and production support.

This position reports to our Developer Platform Director and will require a hybrid working arrangement based out of our Vancouver office.

What you'll do

  • Own the full development lifecycle of public APIs and platform features, from design and implementation to testing and production monitoring.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineering teammates, and external stakeholders to identify and translate developer needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Mentor other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and onboarding support.
  • Contribute to the long-term technical direction and architecture of the developer platform.

Skills you'll bring

  • Engineering Experience: Professional experience designing, launching, and maintaining scalable backend or full-stack platform systems.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in Python or JavaScript, with hands-on experience building APIs, webhooks, and distributed systems.
  • Domain Expertise: Familiarity with platform-level concepts such as OAuth, permission models, rate limits, and event delivery.
  • Operational Excellence: A pragmatic approach to testing, debugging, and troubleshooting production systems within an Agile environment.
  • Communication & Mentorship: Ability to drive technical design, mentor engineers, and clearly explain trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • AI-Forward: Strong interest in Agentic AI and experience using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Gemini, Claude) for development.
  • Bonus Points: Experience building developer platforms, integrations, data pipelines (ETL), or high-throughput async systems (Redis, message queues).
