Union Software Engineer information

What is a union software engineer?

A Union Software Engineer is a software developer who is part of a labor union that advocates for fair wages, job security, and better working conditions. They perform the same technical tasks as other software engineers, such as coding, debugging, and system design, but with added protections and benefits negotiated by their union. These unions help ensure transparent employment policies, collective bargaining power, and support for workplace issues. Unionized software engineers may work in various industries, including tech companies, government agencies, and nonprofits.

How does being a union software engineer differ from a non-union software engineer in terms of work environment and responsibilities?

As a Union Software Engineer, you'll often benefit from defined workplace protections, clearer work hours, and collective bargaining agreements that set standards for pay and benefits. Your responsibilities will still center around software development, but you may also participate in union activities—such as attending meetings, voting on contracts, or collaborating on work-related policies. Daily tasks involve coding, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring software aligns with both organizational and union requirements. This supportive structure can lead to enhanced job security and a strong sense of community among colleagues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union software engineer, and why are they important?

A Union Software Engineer excels with strong programming fundamentals, software development methodologies, and typically holds a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Git, continuous integration pipelines, and knowledge of union contracts or labor management software may be required. Outstanding teamwork, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for bridging technical and union-specific requirements. These abilities are essential for ensuring software solutions meet organizational standards while supporting fair labor practices and productive collaboration.

Job description

About Us
Air-tek is a Canadian-based software company redefining how airlines operate through intelligent automation and modern, scalable systems. Our suite of products has already captured a significant share of a massive global market - and we're only in the early innings.

While our customers know our name, we intentionally operate in stealth mode as we continue to build, innovate, and scale globally.

We're a team of builders, problem-solvers, and innovators passionate about making airline operations seamless, data-driven, and passenger-centric. Based in Toronto, our culture thrives on trust, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement - where every engineer can experiment, own, and make real impact.
The Role
  • We're looking for Senior Software Engineers who are passionate about building high-quality, high-impact products - engineers who don't just write code, but solve problems, think creatively, and care deeply about their craft
  • You'll play a key role in shaping the architecture, design, and development of core systems that touch some of the most complex processes in global aviation. Whether it's scaling integrations, designing robust APIs, or optimizing performance across distributed systems, you'll have the opportunity to own features end-to-end, and ship work that matters.
  • This is a place for doers - engineers who roll up their sleeves, adapt quickly, and take pride in seeing their work in action.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop high-performance, scalable systems that power real-world airline operations.
  • Build and evolve scalable systems end-to-end - from greenfield initiatives to optimizing existing integrations, APIs, and backend services that connect complex data flows and mission critical workflows.
  • Collaborate with a world-class team of engineers, QA, and product leaders to deliver value fast.
  • Take ownership of technical design, code quality, and solution delivery - end-to-end
  • Contribute ideas to architecture and roadmap discussions, influencing direction and standards
  • Be hands-on in debugging, optimizing, and improving reliability across systems.
  • Learn new technologies on the fly and contribute beyond your comfort zone when needed.
About You
  • 6-8+ years of experience in software development.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • You're a strong coder who loves tackling ambiguous problems and building elegant solutions.
  • Solid experience with C# / .NET Core or similar backend technologies.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Vue.js, or other front-end frameworks.
  • Experience building or integrating with microservices, APIs, and distributed systems
  • Exposure to databases like MySQL or MongoDB, and comfort working with message brokers (e.g. RabbitMQ).
  • You think in systems - how things fit together, scale, and impact users.
  • You thrive in fast-moving environments, stay curious, and don't wait for direction.
  • Strong communicator and collaborator who enjoys solving problems as part of a team.
  • You take pride in your work - from the code you write to the value it delivers.
Bonus Points For
  • Hands-on experience with our stack: React, Vue.js, TypeScript, Node.js, .NET Core, MongoDB, Docker, AWS
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, or Team Foundation Server (TFS)
  • Experience with performance optimization or distributed architecture design.
  • Contributions to automation, developer tooling, or internal platform improvements.
Why Join Air-tek
  • Work on meaningful problems that power the backbone of the airline industry.
  • Build production-grade software that scales globally and impacts millions of passengers.
  • Collaborate with brilliant engineers in a high-trust, low-ego environment.
  • Operate with autonomy and ownership - your ideas will shape our products.
  • Exposure to modern technologies, cloud environments, and complex system design
  • Competitive compensation and growth opportunities in a fast-scaling company.
  • Please note that this role requires three days a week in our Toronto office which is located near Union Station

If you love solving hard problems, thrive in ambiguity, and take pride in building software that matters - we want to hear from you.
The salary range for this role is $120,000 to $170,000 annually. In addition to salary, new hires may be eligible to receive stock options. The salary range shared is intended as a guide; the final salary offered may vary based on factors including the experience and skillset of the candidate. Our company is committed to providing a fair, equitable, and competitive salary that reflects the value an individual brings to the organization.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
