Both roles require strong journalism skills, but union journalism emphasizes collective bargaining and employment rights, while freelance journalism offers greater independence and varied opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Union Journalist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Journalist, you need strong reporting, writing, and research skills, along with a relevant degree in journalism or communications. Proficiency with digital publishing platforms, multimedia tools, and knowledge of labor laws or union-specific issues is often required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, objectivity, and the ability to build trust with sources help set top professionals apart in this field. These abilities ensure accurate, impactful coverage of labor issues and foster informed dialogue within unionized workplaces.

What is union journalism?

Union journalism refers to the practice of reporting on labor unions, workers’ rights, and related issues within the workplace. Journalists in this field cover topics such as collective bargaining, labor disputes, strikes, union legislation, and the impact of unions on society and the economy. They may work for mainstream media, union-sponsored publications, or independent outlets, and their reporting helps inform the public about workers’ struggles, achievements, and the broader labor movement. Union journalism often requires an understanding of labor law, economics, and social justice issues.

How do journalists in unionized newsrooms typically collaborate with union representatives to address workplace concerns?

In unionized newsrooms, journalists often have opportunities to work closely with union representatives to address issues such as workload, safety, pay equity, and newsroom policies. Regular meetings between staff and union reps provide a platform for journalists to voice concerns and propose solutions, ensuring their interests are represented in discussions with management. This collaborative structure not only fosters a supportive work environment but also empowers journalists to advocate for fair treatment and professional growth. Many unionized newsrooms also offer training sessions to keep members informed about their rights and best practices for resolving conflicts.

Job description

The Houston Chronicle is looking for a Video Journalist to help bring our journalism to life through high-quality, compelling video.

This role focuses on producing strong video across a range of formats, from breaking news and field reporting to features, franchise series and YouTube projects. You will work closely with producers, reporters and editors to create video that is clear, engaging and built to deepen audience connection.

This is a hands-on role for a skilled video journalist who can report in the field, capture high-quality footage and shape stories through the editing process. The ideal candidate values craft, can operate independently, as part of a team, and is comfortable working across both fast-turn and more produced video.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report, shoot and edit video across formats, including breaking news, explainers, features and franchise series

  • Capture high-quality footage in the field, including interviews, live events and on-the-ground reporting
  • Shape stories through editing, with strong pacing, clean audio and clear narrative structure
  • Contribute to higher-production video, including YouTube videos, recurring series and documentary-style projects
  • Collaborate with producers, reporters, editors and audience teams to execute video tied to newsroom priorities
  • Help maintain visual consistency and quality across recurring formats and franchises
  • Ensure all video meets strong editorial, technical and production standards
  • Manage footage, project files and assets with clear organization and version control
  • Work efficiently under deadline pressure while maintaining a high level of craft

We're Looking for Someone Who

  • Has at least 5 years of professional experience filming and editing video

  • Has a strong reel or portfolio that demonstrates cinematography and editing ability
  • Is highly proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro and tools such as After Effects, AE Juice and Photoshop
  • Has strong skills in videography using Sony cinema line cameras and understands lighting, framing and composition, including building interview setups
  • Understands audio recording techniques and can troubleshoot and enhance audio in the field and in post
  • Is skilled in color correction, exposure and creating a consistent visual look
  • Has experience with motion graphics, keyframing and basic animation for video
  • Demonstrates strong storytelling instincts, including shot selection, pacing and use of sound
  • Is highly organized with file management and understands project workflows and backups
  • Can operate independently in the field and problem-solve in real time
  • Is motivated by producing high-quality video that strengthens our journalism and audience experience

Success is Measured By

  • Consistent delivery of high-quality video that reflects strong storytelling and production standards

  • Contribution to features, franchise series and YouTube content that builds audience over time
  • Strong collaboration with producers and newsroom teams on impactful video projects
  • Ability to balance speed and quality across a range of assignments
