What is union framing?

Union framing refers to the construction of the structural framework of buildings, such as walls, floors, and roofs, by carpenters who are members of a labor union. These workers follow union regulations, receive standardized wages and benefits, and often work on commercial projects or large residential developments. Union framers are trained professionals who ensure the integrity and safety of the building's skeleton. Their work is essential for supporting the rest of the construction process and complying with building codes.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a union framer on a construction site?

A union framer’s daily responsibilities generally include measuring, cutting, and assembling wood or metal framing for walls, floors, and roofs according to blueprints and building codes. They often collaborate closely with other tradespeople, such as electricians and plumbers, to ensure framing accommodates systems installations. Safety, adherence to union standards, and teamwork are essential, as projects are typically fast-paced and require clear communication. Regular tasks also include inspecting tools, maintaining equipment, and participating in site meetings to discuss project progress and address any challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union framing carpenter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Framing Carpenter, you need strong carpentry skills, knowledge of building codes, and typically completion of an apprenticeship or related certification. Familiarity with power tools, hand tools, and construction site safety systems is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and dependability are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These abilities ensure that framing projects are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently, contributing to the overall success of construction projects.

What is the difference between Union Framing vs Non-Union Framing?

What does a union framer make?

A union framer typically earns between $25 and $45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and union agreements. They may also receive benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, and overtime pay, with wages often increasing with skill level and years of service.
