How much do union cleaning jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for union cleaning in the United States is $16.84, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $18.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paid cleaning job?

In the cleaning industry, specialized roles such as industrial or commercial cleaning supervisors and managers tend to have the highest salaries. These positions often require experience, leadership skills, and sometimes certifications, and they can earn significantly more than entry-level cleaning jobs. Salary levels vary based on location, employer, and level of responsibility.

Is housekeeping a union job?

Housekeeping jobs can be union or non-union positions depending on the employer and location. Union housekeeping jobs typically involve collective bargaining for wages, benefits, and working conditions, and may require union membership or dues. Not all housekeeping roles are unionized, so it is important to check the specific employer or industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Union Cleaner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Cleaner, you need a solid understanding of cleaning procedures, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications are typically required. Reliability, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are vital to maintain cleanliness standards, ensure safety, and support efficient operations in various facilities.

What is the difference between Union Cleaning vs Janitorial Cleaning?

AspectUnion CleaningJanitorial Cleaning
CredentialsUnion membership often required, certifications varyTypically no union membership required, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentOften in unionized facilities, structured work hoursVaries widely, may be in commercial or public spaces
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in public sector, government, and unionized companiesUsed across commercial, office, and retail settings
Search & Comparison IntentPeople comparing union vs non-union cleaning jobsPeople seeking general janitorial roles

Union Cleaning involves working for unionized employers with specific membership requirements and often better benefits, while Janitorial Cleaning is a broader term covering general cleaning roles without union affiliation. Both roles focus on maintaining cleanliness but differ in credentials, work environment, and industry usage.

What are some common challenges faced by union cleaning staff, and how are they typically addressed within a unionized environment?

Union cleaning staff often face challenges such as managing large workloads, adhering to strict safety protocols, and meeting varying cleanliness standards across facilities. In a unionized setting, these challenges are typically addressed through collective bargaining agreements that set clear expectations for workload, ensure access to proper training and safety equipment, and provide mechanisms for voicing concerns. Teamwork and open communication with supervisors and coworkers are also emphasized, fostering a supportive environment that helps staff address issues collaboratively.

What are good paying union jobs?

Union cleaning jobs, such as janitorial or custodial positions, can offer competitive wages, especially for experienced workers or those with specialized skills like hazardous material handling or operating cleaning equipment. Higher pay is often associated with union contracts that include benefits, overtime, and seniority pay scales, and some union cleaning roles may require certifications or training. Overall, union jobs in maintenance and cleaning fields tend to provide better pay and job security compared to non-union positions.

Is $50 an hour good for house cleaning?

For a house cleaning job, earning $50 an hour is considered above average, as typical rates range from $20 to $40 per hour depending on location and experience. Skilled cleaners with certifications or specialized services may command higher rates, making $50 an hour a competitive wage in the industry.

What are union cleaning jobs?

Union cleaning jobs refer to positions in the cleaning industry, such as janitors, custodians, or cleaners, that are represented by a labor union. These jobs typically involve maintaining cleanliness in commercial, industrial, or public spaces. Being part of a union means workers have collective bargaining rights, which often lead to better wages, benefits, job security, and working conditions compared to non-unionized positions. Union cleaners may also have access to training programs and support if workplace issues arise. These jobs can be found in settings like schools, hospitals, office buildings, and public facilities.
