Job description

At Allianz Life, we are guided by our mission - we secure your future - and by our common goal of caring for tomorrow. We care for our employees by promoting an inclusive culture where everyone has the opportunity to grow and be rewarded for their success. We care for our customers by creating new products that help them protect their families and pursue their retirement goals. We care for our community by giving time, resources, and donations. And we care for the future by supporting sustainability, protecting the local environment, and promoting equality in our communities.
What you do:
You are considered the subject matter expert in area of life underwriting. Under minimal supervision, you will review and assess the medical and financial risk for routine to highly complex cases across all face amounts, exercising delegated approval authority up to auto-bind and assigning the appropriate risk class. You will communicate underwriting decisions to the producer or FMO and work with internal distribution to communicate the offer when necessary. You provide technical support to the underwriting team and Underwriting Director. You will also provide informal leadership to the underwriting team through education, workload management, and process improvement. May travel and deliver presentations, representing Allianz Life at industry events and to distribution partners. You will report to the Underwriting Manager.
  • Able to independently work through difficult formal and informal cases by reviewing medical records, medical exams, financial documents, telephone interviews, and other underwriting requirements to determine proper risk class assessment in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Properly document risk assessment information and underwriting decisions within system application.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions with field distribution, agents, and FMOs. Build rapport by educating on additional strategies that can be used to present adverse decisions to clients, as well as education on our products, requirements and underwriting philosophy.
  • Correspond effectively with internal and external customers regarding the status of cases, including field and internal distribution partners, the medical community, reinsurers and vendors.
  • Act as a team lead, mentor and coach to other underwriters and Enterprise Operations employees, as needed.
  • Recommend improvements to the internal Underwriting guidelines, operational procedures, and standards; participate on department projects as assigned.
  • Represent the Underwriting department in industry forums, carrier meetings, and business partner discussions as required, supporting collaboration and alignment with underwriting strategy and philosophy.
  • Utilization of artificial intelligence tools and resources (e.g. generative AI).

What you bring:
  • 8+ years of experience: Life Insurance Underwriting required.
  • Four-year degree required: Business, communications or medical fields of study or equivalent work experience.
  • You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes holders of H-1B, H4, L-1, L-2, TN, OPT, CPT, and other nonimmigrant visas.

Job posting range: $117,000 - $200,000
Note the job posting range is exclusive of company benefits or other compensation. This role is also eligible for an annual incentive program. If you are hired, your final base salary will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, experience, skills, competencies, and/or education. In addition to those factors, we will also consider internal equity of our current employees. Please keep in mind that the range provided is the full base salary range for the role. Hiring at or near the maximum of the range would not be typical to allow for future and continued salary growth.
