Job description

Underwrites holistic, complex insurance applications for multiple products by evaluating the insurability of applicants within established guidelines. All underwriting is on individual lives and no group insurance. May include complex case work including business, charitable gifting, estate planning and other types of advanced sales scenarios. Reviews risk factors, which include medical and nonmedical history, financial requirements, and occupational classes (where relevant) as well as a variety of legal documents supporting the insurance applications. Makes final underwriting decision for all ages and classes within specified approval limits and according to suitability guidelines and compliance policy. The approval limit for this position is <=$2,000,000 if life, $11,000 if DI.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Contributes to accurate and consistent risk selection as well as fraud detection.
  • Ensures high level of customer satisfaction by partnering with financial associates, team members, medical and legal consultants to determine the best possible outcome for members.
  • Handles complex and sensitive written and verbal communications, often influencing behavior via these communications.
  • Actively engages in the activities of their team(s). These activities include assisting less experienced coworkers, training, managing workflow, flexing to ensure appropriate coverage and using interpersonal skills to increase effectiveness of working relationships as well as team performance.
  • Begins Mentoring and Completes quality audits on underwriters and/or underwriting support associates.
  • The dollar limit for this position is minimum <=$2,000,000 if life, $11,000 participation limits if DI.
  • Decisions are generally case specific and can expose Thrivent Financial up to $2 Million risk per case
  • In-depth knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy.
  • Ability to comprehend variety of medical and financial records to extract and combine relevant pieces of information to form judgment. High-level decision-making skills.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills - written and verbal communication, coaching and negotiation.
  • Comfort working in a fast paced, quickly changing and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Begins actively engaging in field training and fostering relationships with our field partners.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Required:
  • Bachelors Degree preferred and/or 4 years of relevant experience in the insurance industry
  • Minimum 4 years of holistic individual Life (or Health for Disability Income) Underwriting experience in the insurance industry with a minimum approval authority of <=$2,000,000 if life, $11,000 if DI.
  • Completion of or progress coursework towards ACS, FLMI and/or FALU designations.
  • Strong customer and team focus.
  • Strong PC skills.
  • Broad perspective understanding of Thrivent Financial and the financial services industry.
  • Ability to train and mentor others remotely and provide constructive feedback.

Other Critical Factors
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
  • Experience underwriting foreign nationals / non-U.S. persons preferred
