What is an underwriter development program?

An Underwriter Development Program is a structured training initiative offered by insurance companies or financial institutions to prepare individuals for careers as underwriters. Participants typically receive a mix of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship to learn about risk assessment, policy evaluation, and decision-making processes. The goal of the program is to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate insurance applications, determine coverage terms, and assess potential risks. These programs often lead to full-time underwriting positions upon successful completion.

What can I expect from the training and mentorship provided in an underwriter development program?

Participants in an Underwriter Development Program typically receive a blend of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and mentorship from experienced underwriters. You can expect to rotate through various lines of business, work on real case studies, and gradually take on more responsibility as you build your technical and analytical skills. Mentors and managers provide regular feedback and support, helping you to understand underwriting guidelines, risk assessment, and client interaction. This structured training approach prepares you for a successful underwriting career and often leads to advancement opportunities within the company.

If you're energized by solving complex problems, working cross-functionally, and helping shape the future of embedded insurance, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
What You'll Do
  • Develop program submissions for new insurance products based on existing or newly developed forms and actuarial models.
  • Own the reporting and analysis of underwriting and portfolio performance metrics, providing insights to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Partner with internal and external partners to develop, maintain, and enhance policy forms and program documentation.
  • Assist in securing capacity from reinsurance and insurers, including preparing materials and data for partner meetings.
  • Support the development and maintenance of insurance products across multiple business verticals.
  • Monitor and analyze product performance metrics, identifying trends, and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product, Engineering, and others to ensure insurance products align with customer and business needs.
  • Contribute to special projects that improve insurance operations and support new product launches.

Who You Are
  • 2-7 years of experience in the insurance industry, ideally in underwriting, program management, or product support
  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Risk Management, Finance or a related analytical field.
  • Experience working with insurance carriers, MGAs, or carrier relationships; experience with Insurtech is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in growing within a fast-paced startup and learning how to manage insurance programs end-to-end.

Experience That Goes the Extra Mile
  • Demonstrated ability to create and improve underwriting and operational processes.
  • Background in fintech, insurance, or vertical SaaS industries.
