Job description

UNC Health is seeking a Pathologist to provide comprehensive anatomic and clinical pathology services and serve as Medical Director of the laboratory at a UNC Health hospital. This position is a clinically focused, service-oriented role supporting high-quality patient care, efficient diagnostic services, and strong collaboration with hospital leadership, clinicians, and laboratory staff.

The role emphasizes operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and timely pathology services in a hospital environment. This position does not carry academic teaching, research, or grant funding expectations.

Clinical Responsibilities

Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Services

  • Provide diagnostic interpretation of routine surgical pathology specimens and biopsies appropriate to a hospital setting.

  • Perform and interpret intraoperative frozen sections as required.

  • Participate in cytology services (e.g., non-gynecologic cytology, FNA interpretation) as applicable to site needs.

  • Ensure accurate, complete, and clinically meaningful pathology reports.

  • Meet established turnaround time expectations for pathology sign-out in alignment with UNC Health standards and local hospital needs.

Clinical Collaboration

  • Serve as an on-site pathology resource for surgeons, proceduralists, and other clinicians.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences or tumor boards as requested.

  • Collaborate with UNC Health subspecialty pathologists and central services for complex cases or consultations, as needed.

Medical Director of Pathology Responsibilities

As Medical Director, the Pathologist will provide leadership and oversight for pathology and laboratory services at the assigned UNC Health hospital, including:

  • Serve as the medical leader for pathology and laboratory services in collaboration with hospital administration and laboratory leadership.

  • Provide oversight of laboratory quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance, including CLIA, CAP, and other accrediting bodies.

  • Participate in the development, review, and implementation of laboratory policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Support laboratory inspections, audits, and corrective action plans as required.

  • Advise hospital leadership on pathology and laboratory operational matters, staffing models, and service planning.

  • Foster strong working relationships with clinicians, laboratory staff, and UNC Health system partners.

  • Support alignment of pathology services with UNC Health standards, system initiatives, and best practices.

Medical directorship duties are expected to be integrated into the overall role and compensated consistent with UNC Health pathology benchmarks.

Operational Expectations

  • Maintain an on-site presence consistent with hospital coverage needs.

  • Participate in call coverage as defined by the hospital and UNC Health pathology service model.

  • Support efficient case flow and coordination with UNC Health centralized or subspecialty pathology services when applicable.

  • Utilize UNC Health clinical and operational systems, including EPIC, for documentation and communication.

Qualifications

Required

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP).

  • Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in the state of North Carolina.

  • Demonstrated competence in general surgical pathology.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaborative skills.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a hospital or non-academic pathology practice.

  • Experience serving as a pathology or laboratory medical director.

  • Familiarity with UNC Health-style integrated delivery systems.

  • Experience with EPIC or similar electronic medical record platforms.

Work Environment

  • Hospital-based clinical practice.

  • Service-focused role with predictable scheduling aligned to hospital operations.

  • No routine teaching, research, or academic productivity requirements.
