What does a UL engineer do?

A UL Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products meet safety and regulatory standards set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). They collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to test products, identify potential hazards, and recommend improvements to meet compliance requirements. UL Engineers also document testing procedures, maintain certification records, and stay updated on evolving standards. Their work ensures that electrical, mechanical, and other consumer products are safe for public use.

What are some common challenges faced by UL engineers in the certification process?

UL Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting evolving safety standards, managing complex testing schedules, and troubleshooting product failures during assessment. Meeting tight project deadlines while ensuring rigorous adherence to compliance protocols can require strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Collaboration with cross-functional teams like product design, manufacturing, and regulatory affairs is frequent, as UL Engineers must clearly communicate requirements and findings to achieve certification. Adapting quickly to new industry standards and technological changes also keeps the role dynamic and rewarding for those interested in continuous learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UL engineer?

To thrive as a UL Engineer, you need a strong understanding of safety standards, compliance testing procedures, and electrical or mechanical engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) standards, testing equipment, and regulatory compliance software is essential, and certifications like Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are often valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial for interpreting test results and collaborating with product development teams. These skills ensure products meet safety and regulatory requirements, helping companies achieve certification and maintain consumer trust.

Role Description
Form Energy is hiring a Senior Electronics Test Engineer to join our BMS Test team. In this role, you will be responsible for getting our BMS electronics hardware through UL 991 certification. You will ensure that BMS electronics meet functional and compliance requirements through structured test campaigns. You'll collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, systems, and compliance engineers to validate designs that are central to the safe and reliable operation of our battery systems.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the scaling of our battery technology and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!
Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do:
  • UL Certification Ownership: Act as the EE technical lead in cooperation with a compliance engineer for product safety certification on our BMS PCBAs, specifically driving strategies to pass UL 991.
  • Automated PCBA Functional Testing: Architect, write, and execute end-to-end automated test plans for functional testing for use during compliance testing.
  • Test Fixture Design & Development: Design and assemble physical, automated test fixtures to interface with PCBAs under test, focussing heavily on fault injection to validate PCBA safe state functionality after UL stress testing. Support will be provided by the SW test team and Test Infrastructure teams.
  • Documentation & FMEA: Generate rigorous test reports, maintain traceability matrices, and collaborate on Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA) to prepare technical data packages for UL auditors.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to troubleshoot and root-cause hardware issues identified during testing.
  • Maintain traceability between requirements, test cases, and results in accordance with product verification standards.
  • Support design verification reviews and contribute to test readiness and completion criteria.
  • Ensure tests are conducted in compliance with safety protocols and relevant industry standards.

What you'll bring:
  • 4-7 years of experience in PCBA hardware testing.
  • UL Experience: Minimum of 3-5+ years of hands-on experience navigating products through UL certification pipelines, with specific, demonstrable knowledge of UL 991, UL 1998, or IEC 61508 / ISO 13849 functional safety standards.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience using python to write automated test scripts.
  • Hands-on experience with test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power supplies, data acquisition systems, environmental chambers).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage test plans, execute verification activities, and communicate findings effectively.
