About KOTA/KEVN:

Why You’ll Love It Here: Creative freedom: This isn't a "rinse and repeat" role. You’ll have the flexibility to use your talents and explore new ways to tell stories. Real community impact: You’ll be working at KOTA/KEVN in Rapid City, a station deeply rooted in the community and committed to local journalism. Growth and innovation: Gray Media is evolving on purpose, and you’ll be at the forefront of how we define the future of local media. A team that has your back: Work alongside passionate professionals who value collaboration and "scrappiness" as much as you do. Never a dull moment: With opportunities across broadcast, streaming, and digital, you’ll never feel stuck or stale. Ready to be more than just a producer? Let’s create something amazing together.

Job Summary/Description:

We’re looking for a News Producer at KOTA/KEVN who wants to be more than a traditional newscast architect. We want a storyteller who can work the phones, grill sources, and find that "breakout angle" that turns a standard report into a must-watch (and must-click) event. If you’re ready to lead the conversation across every screen—from the living room TV to the palm of our viewers' hands—let’s talk.

Duties/Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

You'll Own the story cycle: Go beyond handling content created by others; proactively find, update, and elevate local stories that impact Augusta.
- Drive multi-platform urgency: Get fresh information into our newscasts and onto our digital platforms with speed and accuracy.
- Be the interviewer: Don't just set up the meeting; be the one asking the tough questions and digging for the truth in the interviews you coordinate.
- Collaborate for impact: Work closely with reporters to find unique angles and expand content, ensuring our coverage is never stale.
- Craft conversational scripts: Write engaging, punchy copy for broadcast and streaming that sounds like a human talking to a human.
- Master digital storytelling: Pivot from broadcast scripts to long-form digital print for our website and social media platforms with ease.
- Navigate the newsroom: Utilize ENPS and other newsroom software to keep our operations running like a well-oiled machine.

Qualifications/Requirements:

What You Bring: A journalism pedigree: You have a degree in journalism (or equivalent experience) and a deep understanding of news ethics and storytelling.
- Hands-on experience: You didn't just watch from the sidelines; you’ve worked in a campus news station and completed an internship where you actually did the work.
- Digital-first mindset: You understand that news happens everywhere, and you’re just as comfortable posting to social media as you are producing a 6 PM block.
- Sourcing skills: You know how to work a phone, build relationships with sources, and uncover information that others miss.
- Software savvy: Experience with ENPS is a huge plus, but your ability to learn and master newsroom systems is what really matters.
- Flexibility and grit: You thrive in the fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable world of news and aren't afraid to pivot when a story breaks.
- Killer writing skills: Whether it’s a 15-second tease or a 500-word web article, your writing is clear, compelling, and accurate.
