The Sandhills Research Station is one of eighteen agricultural research centers in the State of North Carolina. North Carolina State University owns the Sandhills Research Station with operational management through the Division of Research Stations and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service. North Carolina State University and the Division of Research Stations establish the general operating procedures. The regional distribution of research stations throughout North Carolina is designed to address agricultural questions as they pertain to specific geographic areas.
The Sandhills Research Station is a vital link in the chain of research stations in addressing agricultural concerns of the Sandhills area of North Carolina. The primary purpose of the Research Station is to provide land, personnel, expertise, facilities, and equipment to research scientists conducting agricultural research projects that address specific questions concerning crop production in North Carolina. The Sandhills Research Station encompasses 570 acres and is an important training facility for crop producers, graduate students, high school students, and the general public. Current research projects involve the production or improvement of soybeans, cotton, turfgrass, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, landscape ornamentals, and sweet potatoes.

Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician position will provide operational support for agricultural research projects. Primary crops include peaches, blueberries, ornamentals, cotton, soybeans, and turfgrass. This position will provide knowledge and skills to support existing research programs through field work, tractor and other farm equipment operation, pesticide application, and cultural crop care. Position is task-oriented with a heavy focus on equipment operation and field work.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct field work activities in support of ongoing agricultural research projects.
  • Operate tractors and other farm equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Apply pesticides according to established protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Provide cultural care for various crops.
  • Assist in the coordination and execution of research experiments and trials.
  • Maintain accurate records of field activities, observations, and data collection.
  • Collaborate with research scientists and other team members to achieve project objectives.
  • Lifting items 50 lbs. on a routine basis, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in agriculture production and/or agricultural research.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate farm machinery.
  • Communication skills in both oral and written forms; ability to read and follow pesticide labels and research protocols.
  • Ability to collect and record data accurately.
Required License or Certification
  • NC Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 60 days
  • NC Forklift Driver Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Medical respirator certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months
