Job description

Machine Operator

Tulsa World, a Lee Enterprises company, is hiring a full-time Machine Operator.  This position assumes primary responsibility for the operation of all mailroom equipment including insert machines, stackers, strappers, and other equipment. This position retrieves and stages inserts correctly and promptly as well as assisting with Inserter work assignments to redistribute resources as needed.

Position Responsibilities

  • Establish packaging operation for day-side including opening procedures. Generate crew assignments for feeding, stacking and setting up hoppers and provide training to those individuals unfamiliar with the insert machines. Setup, verify and run the inserting machines.
  • Work with the Packaging Supervisors to ensure all areas are covered for manpower, supplies, etc. Ensure that inserts and finished product are complete, accurate and meet quality standards.  Make sure all insert packages are checked and correct.
  • Prefer to be familiar with Hieldelberg 630, and Sheridan inserting machines, but not necessary
  • Direct packaging staff.  Based upon knowledge of individual employees’ skills and abilities, use your independent judgment to place employees in positions, adjust their positions, and otherwise assign the employees to produce the best quality product.
  • Setting up and running all insert machines used in the assembly of the finished product.  Alert the packaging supervisory team to any major system problems so they may be addressed quickly.
  • Get all products loaded and to the dock on time.
  • Must be able to run all equipment in the mailroom.
  • Verify bottom wrap printing.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must have excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prefer one to two years of experience working in a packaging operation /or production operation
