Job description

At Apple, we don’t treat quality and performance as validation steps - we engineer them into the fabric of our systems. Within Wallet, Payments & Commerce (WPC), our platforms power Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Tap to Pay on iPhone, Installments, Connected Accounts, and global payment processing infrastructure serving millions of users and processing billions of transactions. We are seeking a Distinguished Engineer to define and lead the end-to-end Quality Engineering and Performance strategy for Apple’s financial services ecosystem.
This role is responsible for architecting systemic reliability, scalability, resilience, and measurable engineering excellence across one of the most critical and regulated platforms at Apple. This is not a test leadership role. This is a platform-defining technical authority role reporting to the head of Quality & Performance software engineering team.
Description
As a Distinguished Engineer for QE & Performance, you will define how quality, resilience, and performance are architected, measured, and enforced across all WPC systems. You will operate at Apple scale - influencing architecture before code is written, embedding reliability principles into platform design, and defining measurable standards that protect customer trust and financial integrity worldwide.
You will:
Define the long-term vision for Quality Engineering, Performance Engineering, Reliability, and Production Validation across WPC.
Architect systemic reliability frameworks spanning development, pre-production, and runtime environments.
Establish and govern SLO/SLA standards, latency budgets, scalability targets, and risk tolerance models.
Lead cross-organizational initiatives to embed “quality by design” into distributed financial systems.
Partner with Architecture, Platform, Infrastructure, Security, Compliance, and Business teams to ensure systems meet both Apple’s user experience standards and regulatory requirements.
Elevate QE & Performance from functional support to strategic engineering leverage.Mentor and grow senior technical leaders across global teams.
At Apple, there is no playbook for this level of impact. Success requires first-principles thinking, hands-on technical credibility, and the ability to influence at scale without formal authority.","responsibilities":"Reliability & Resilience Architecture
Define and evolve WPC’s reliability engineering framework across multi-region, high-availability systems.
Champion chaos engineering, failover validation, and disaster recovery strategy for mission-critical payment systems.
Establish systemic defect prevention methodologies rather than reactive validation processes.
Performance Engineering Strategy
Define performance budgets and latency targets across distributed services.
Lead large-scale performance optimization initiatives across cloud-native infrastructure (AWS and hybrid environments).
Balance scalability, cost-efficiency, and customer experience through measurable engineering standards.
Quality as a Platform
Architect and evolve automation platforms supporting millions of weekly test executions.
Drive AI-assisted test generation, log analysis, anomaly detection, and validation systems.
Define release governance models that minimize regression risk while accelerating delivery velocity.
Observability & Production Validation
Establish end-to-end observability standards across services, including metrics, tracing, and runtime validation.
Embed real-time quality telemetry into production systems.
Define measurable health indicators and engineering scorecards across WPC.
Organizational Influence
Serve as the technical authority for QE & Performance in senior engineering forums.
Drive alignment across WPC, Infrastructure, and broader Apple engineering.
Mentor Principal and Senior Engineers in distributed systems reliability and performance design.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in payment systems, money movement, tokenization, or transaction processing.
Experience in testing global multi-region failover architectures.
Background in large-scale automated testing platforms (server, UI, API, distributed systems).
Familiarity with compliance-driven system design in financial ecosystems.
Experience evolving engineering culture toward measurable reliability and performance ownership.
Minimum Qualifications
Deep expertise in reliability engineering, large-scale automation systems, and performance engineering for distributed systems.
Experience defining SLO/SLA frameworks for mission-critical systems at massive scale.
Proven track record architecting resilience strategies across cloud-native environments (AWS or comparable platforms).
Experience working with regulated financial or high-trust systems.
Demonstrated ability to influence architectural direction across large, complex organizations.
Strong background in observability, telemetry systems, and production validation strategies.
Experience embedding AI/ML-driven validation or engineering productivity systems.
Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to executive and engineering audiences.
Demonstrated success mentoring and elevating senior technical leaders.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
