GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The position of Tree Trimmer is part of the townโ€™s electric crew. This position ensures that dead or excess branches from trees or shrubs are maintained for clear right-of-ways, roads, sidewalks, or utilities for the entire town. The Tree Trimmer is a vital part of the upkeep and beautification of the town. This position is designated as an essential position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Assist in evaluating work sites to help determine safe and effective methods for completing assignments.
  • Perform tree trimming and removal work under the direction of a supervisor or senior crew member.
  • Ensure all Town tree trimming needs are met, including but not limited to street rights-of-way, water and sewer areas, electric utility lines, and Parks and Recreation facilities.
  • Operate and maintain various equipment and tools which are used for daily tree trimming assignments.
  • Climb trees or operate an aerial lift to trim or remove limbs as assigned.
  • Remove or chip cut tree limbs with a woodchipper.
  • Load brush, limbs, and debris onto Town vehicles for removal and disposal.
  • Assist with assembling and properly using equipment and tools.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment as directed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Follow all safety procedures and precautions related to equipment operation, tree climbing, and work zone setup.
  • Stay informed of departmental policies, procedures, and operational practices.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and members of the general public.
  • Demonstrate initiative in maintaining efficient and productive work performance.
  • Operate chainsaws to cut brush, logs, and stumps as assigned.
  • Apply chemical herbicides to right-of-ways following brush removal, in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Utilize ATV-mounted spray equipment or backpack sprayers to treat designated areas.
  • Assist in maintaining bucket trucks, service trucks, chippers, and related equipment in clean and proper working order.
  • Work safely around hazardous equipment and excessive noise, using required personal protective equipment.
  • Perform duties in varying weather conditions and environments, including exposure to plants, insects, dust, and uneven terrain.
  • Work around falling limbs and other job-site hazards while using proper protective measures.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical conduct and professionalism.
  • Assist all departments of Public Works as determined by the Public Works Director.
  • Performs other duties as required.

The employee must be able to perform heavy work exerting up-to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20pounds constantly to lift objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts;high and precarious places; outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxicor caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually excessive and requires hearing protection.


QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Skilled in maneuvering equipment at the job site.
  • Minimum of High School Graduation or Equivalent.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial B driverโ€™s license or ability to obtain one.
  • May require mandatory callbacks during inclement weather.
  • May include nights, weekends, and holidays.
