Tree Seasonal workers are individuals employed on a temporary or seasonal basis to assist with the care, planting, maintenance, and removal of trees. Their work is often tied to specific times of year, such as planting seasons in spring and fall, or during periods requiring increased maintenance like summer pruning or autumn leaf collection. They may work for municipalities, landscaping companies, or tree service providers, and their duties can include operating machinery, trimming branches, and ensuring tree health. This role often requires physical stamina and knowledge of tree care practices.

Tree Seasonal workers often experience physically demanding days, especially during planting or harvesting periods when workloads and weather conditions can be intense. Managing fatigue, working safely with tools and equipment, and adapting to variable outdoor environments are common challenges. Familiarity with tools like chainsaws, pruners, and possibly OSHA safety certifications is typically required. Physical stamina, attention to safety, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities are essential to ensure safe, efficient tree maintenance and contribute to the health and aesthetics of outdoor environments.

Job Summary

Paul’s Tree Service is looking for a hardworking, reliable, and safety-conscious Tree Groundsman to join our crew. In this role, you will be the backbone of our daily operations, supporting our tree climbers and bucket truck operators from the ground. Your primary focus will be ensuring a safe job site, operating ground equipment, and managing debris clearance.

If you love working outdoors and thrive in a team environment, we want to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities

  • Site Preparation & Safety: Set up cones, signs, and safety barriers at work zones; maintain a clear and secure perimeter around dropping zones.
  • Ground Support: Assist climbers and aerial lift operators by knots-tying, rigging gear, and passing tools/equipment up to the canopy.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain chainsaws, wood chippers, stump grinders, leaf blowers, and hand tools.
  • Debris Removal: Drag brush, carry heavy logs, and load wood chips into trucks to ensure the client's property is left pristine.
  • Driver Duties: Safely drive company trucks and tow equipment trailers to and from various job sites.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Prior experience in tree care, landscaping, construction, or outdoor manual labor is highly preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 50–75 lbs repeatedly, stand for long periods, and work outdoors in varying Pittsburgh weather conditions (heat, rain, cold).
  • Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to PPE requirements (helmet, eye protection, steel-toed boots, and ear protection) and safe tool handling.
  • Licensing: Valid Driver’s License required; a Clean Driving Record or CDL is a major plus.
  • Attributes: Strong communication skills, punctuality, and a team-first attitude.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass a background check and drug testing upon hiring. Random drug tests will be administered throughout employment at employers discretion.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Pay: $15 - $20 per hour (Dependent on experience and licensing).
  • Gear Provided: All specialized safety equipment and company apparel are provided.
  • Growth Opportunities: Foot-in-the-door opportunity to learn the trade and advance into climbing, rigging, or crew leadership roles.
  • Local Work: Stay close to home with jobs primarily servicing the greater South Hills area of Pittsburgh.
