JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs work required for the care, maintenance and development of City parks, lawns, landscape beds, trees, irrigation systems, and general grounds of City owned property. Does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Operates and perform light-duty maintenance on vehicles, tractors, bucket trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, weed eaters, edger, chain saws, chippers, stump grinders, backpack blowers, sprayers, snow blowers, handsaws, rakes, shovels, and other small tools.
  • Drives a dump truck.
  • Climbs to heights of at least 75 feet.
  • Performs tree maintenance and removals.
  • Performs maintenance activities in City parks.
  • Operates a bucket truck, chipper, chipper truck, stump grinder, all types of chain saws and other tree-related equipment.
  • Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, sand, mulch, and debris.
  • Cleans, maintains, services equipment, and make minor equipment repairs.
  • Performs heavy manual labor for extended periods under all weather conditions, frequently lifting objects weighing 75 pounds.
  • Make judgments related to the job and job tasks while working.
  • Performs duties while standing, walking, bending, sitting, or climbing trees and ladders.
  • Operates various hand tools, including but not limited to, shovel, sledgehammer, chain saw, weed eater, rakes, pitchfork, ax, maul, backpack blower, backpack sprayer, and tiller.
  • Sprays trees for the control of insects and diseases.
  • Braces trees with bolts and cables, when necessary.
  • Wears protective equipment in accordance with O.S.H.A. requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
  • Must be proficient in tree climbing using the rope and saddle method and proper groundwork.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn about the care and proper use of tools and equipment used in the development and maintenance of lawns, landscape beds, trees, hardscape areas, and general grounds owned by the City.
  • Ability to quickly learn proper methods of maintenance, care, and installation of landscape beds, lawns, trees, irrigation systems and general grounds of the City.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn about plant diseases, insects, chemicals, and the proper methods used to control such undesirable elements.
  • Ability to distinguish between different cleaning materials, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, with the ability to read and understand label information.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds and to repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing more than 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures of tree care and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of safety practices associated with tree maintenance.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools and chain saws.
  • Ability to work at heights.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two (2) years of experience in tree care and maintenance including but not limited to: tree climbing, tree pruning, tree removal, operation of stump grinder, chipper, chipper truck, bucket truck, and other tree-related equipment. Must be 18 years old and possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license
If the position is a seasonal/temporary position, it is not eligible for union benefits.
