This role often involves problem-solving, supporting underperforming locations, and acting as a liaison between corporate leadership and site-level teams. Traveling General Managers must be adaptable, highly organized, and skilled at working with diverse teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traveling general manager?

To thrive as a Traveling General Manager, you need strong leadership, operational management, and problem-solving abilities, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or hospitality. Familiarity with POS systems, inventory management software, and reporting tools is commonly required, along with certifications such as ServSafe for hospitality roles. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and organizational skills help you build rapport with diverse teams and efficiently address challenges in various locations. These capabilities are crucial for maintaining consistent business standards and driving performance across multiple sites.

What are some common challenges faced by traveling general managers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Traveling General Managers often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new teams, diverse business cultures, and varying operational procedures at each location. Building trust and rapport with local staff in a short time frame is essential, as is being able to assess and address location-specific issues efficiently. Project & Client Management
  • Build and maintain strong client and subcontractor relationships to facilitate repeat business and referrals.
  • Monitor project execution, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality expectations are met.
  • Handle customer inquiries, complaints, and warranty issues with professionalism.
  • Collaborate with sales and account management teams on new opportunities and growth initiatives.

People Leadership
  • Supervise, coach, and support branch staff, including project managers, crews, warehouse, and administrative personnel.
  • Lead recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and professional development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, corrective actions, and ongoing staff support.

Safety & Compliance
  • Implement and enforce OSHA and company safety policies across all projects and sites.
  • Ensure proper documentation for audits, inspections, and compliance reporting.
  • Oversee fleet, tools, and equipment for safe operation and regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise and support CDL drivers assigned to the branch, ensuring compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and Company transportation and safety requirements.
  • Oversee fleet safety practices, including vehicle inspections, maintenance schedules, and accident reporting procedures.
  • Participate in or lead investigations and corrective actions related to vehicle incidents involving branch personnel.

Special Projects
  • Lead or participate in branch- or company-level initiatives as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in operations management, preferably in construction, renovation, or specialty trades
  • Proven leadership and team management experience.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, P&L management, and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, project management, and building codes.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under tight deadlines.

  • Travel regularly to job sites, branch locations, vendor facilities, and client meetings as required by business needs.
  • Maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record in accordance with Company standards.
  • Continue to strive for EXCELLENCE in all you do!
