What is travel data analytics?

Travel data analytics refers to the process of collecting, processing, and analyzing data related to the travel industry, such as flight bookings, hotel reservations, customer preferences, and travel trends. Professionals in this field use statistical and analytical methods to uncover insights that can help travel companies optimize operations, improve customer experiences, and increase profitability. By leveraging large datasets, they can identify emerging patterns, forecast demand, and make data-driven decisions to stay competitive in the market.

What is the difference between Travel Data Analytics vs Travel Data Analyst?

Work EnvironmentData teams, travel companies, analytics departmentsTravel agencies, tour operators, hospitality firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed for strategic insights, forecasting, and decision-makingUsed for reporting, data interpretation, and operational support

Travel Data Analytics involves analyzing large datasets to generate strategic insights, often requiring advanced skills and tools. In contrast, a Travel Data Analyst focuses on interpreting data for operational purposes, typically with less emphasis on complex analytics. Both roles are essential in the travel industry but differ in scope and technical depth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Travel Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Travel Data Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in statistics, and a background in data analysis or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI, SQL databases, and potentially certifications in analytics or data science are typical requirements. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail help you interpret trends and present actionable insights to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for optimizing travel operations, enhancing customer experiences, and driving data-informed decisions in the travel industry.

What are some common challenges faced in a Travel Data Analytics role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Travel Data Analytics often encounter challenges such as integrating data from multiple sources (e.g., booking engines, customer reviews, and global distribution systems) and ensuring data quality and consistency. Addressing these challenges requires strong data management skills, familiarity with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and effective communication with IT and business teams to clarify requirements. Staying updated with industry-specific analytics tools and trends also helps in transforming complex datasets into actionable insights for travel businesses.

Job description

About Engine
At Engine, we're transforming business travel into something personalized, rewarding, and simple. For too long, managing travel and spend has been overwhelming and fragmented - we're here to change that. We believe the future of travel should be seamless and powered by technology that delights customers at every step. That's why we're building a platform that brings together corporate travel, a powerful charge card, and modern spend management in one place.
To make this vision real, we're looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel.
More than 30,000 companies already rely on Engine to support over 1 million travelers and billions in annual bookings each year. Cash flow positive with rapid growth, we pair exclusive Engine-only rates, industry-leading rewards, and intelligent automation to help businesses save money while delivering world-class personalization and convenience.
Backed by Telescope Partners, Blackstone, and Permira, Engine has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing travel and fintech platforms in North America, with honors including the Deloitte Fast 500 and Built In's Best Places to Work.
Your Mission
We are looking for a Data Analytics Manager to join our Data organization. This leader will oversee analytics for our Pricing & Supply teams, a highly strategic part of the business responsible for helping Engine deliver competitive pricing, strong marketplace coverage, better supplier performance, and an exceptional customer experience.
This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who enjoys operating close to the business, developing strong analysts, and turning complex marketplace and commercial questions into clear insights, scalable analytics, and better decisions. You do not need to come from a pricing or supply background, but you should be excited by the opportunity to work on problems that sit at the center of growth, margin, inventory, conversion, and customer value.
As part of Engine's Data team, you will help shape how analytics supports a fast-growing travel technology company at scale.
What You'll Do
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately 8 data analysts supporting Pricing & Supply initiatives.
  • Partner closely with leaders across Pricing, Supply, Product and Data to define analytical priorities and drive measurable business impact.
  • Build a strong analytics operating model, including prioritization, stakeholder management, quality standards, reusable reporting, and scalable insight generation.
  • Translate ambiguous business questions into clear analytical plans, decision frameworks, dashboards, experiments, and recommendations.
  • Help the business better understand pricing performance, supplier coverage, marketplace dynamics, conversion, margin, customer behavior, and operational levers.
  • Raise the bar for analytical rigor across the team, including metric definition, data storytelling, root-cause analysis, experimentation, and forecasting.
  • Develop analysts into stronger business partners who can influence decisions, communicate clearly, and operate with ownership.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the data foundation, partnering with data engineering and analytics engineering teams to improve tooling, data models, and self-service capabilities.
What You'll Bring to Engine
Required
  • 7+ years of experience in data analytics, business analytics, data science, or a related analytical function.
  • 3+ years of experience managing, mentoring, and developing analysts or analytics teams.
  • Strong SQL skills and comfort working with large, complex datasets.
  • Experience using data to influence business decisions in a high-growth, product-led, marketplace, e-commerce, SaaS, travel, fintech, logistics, or similarly complex operating environment.
  • Strong business judgment, with the ability to connect analytics work to revenue, margin, customer experience, operational efficiency, or strategic priorities.
  • Experience building scalable analytics processes, dashboards, reporting standards, and prioritization systems.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A strong track record of hiring, developing, and retaining high-performing analytical talent.
Preferred
  • Experience supporting pricing, supply, marketplace, revenue management, inventory, procurement, or commercial strategy teams.
  • Experience with modern data tools such as dbt, Snowflake, Databricks, Airflow, Looker, Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • Exposure to experimentation, A/B testing, forecasting, segmentation, causal analysis, or advanced analytics methods.
  • Experience building analytics functions, centers of excellence, or team operating models in a scaling company.
  • Experience in travel, hospitality, marketplace, B2B SaaS, or high-transaction-volume businesses.

We accept applications for this role on an ongoing basis. We review applications as they are received and encourage interested candidates to apply early.
Compensation
Our compensation packages are based on several factors, including your experience, expertise, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, total compensation may include equity and/or variable pay (OTE). Your recruiter will share your complete compensation package as you move through the process.
