What is transportation operations?

Transportation Operations refers to the management and coordination of the movement of goods, services, or people from one location to another. This field involves planning routes, scheduling shipments, tracking deliveries, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and optimizing logistics processes. Professionals in transportation operations work in industries such as logistics, freight, public transit, and supply chain management to ensure efficient and timely transportation services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in transportation operations?

To thrive in Transportation Operations, you need a solid understanding of logistics, supply chain management, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in business, logistics, or a related field. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), fleet tracking software, and relevant certifications such as a Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) are commonly required. Job description

Safelift Transportation is seeking a dependable, people-focused Transportation Operations Supervisor to help lead our Columbus operation.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with leadership or supervisory experience who is comfortable making decisions, solving problems, and working with people. Previous transportation or logistics experience is helpful, but it is not required. We are willing to train the right person.

Our current manager, a long-term member of our team, will provide hands-on training to help the person we hire learn our operation and successfully transition into the role.

What You'll Do

As the Transportation Operations Supervisor, you will help keep our daily delivery operation running safely, efficiently, and on schedule. You will work closely with drivers, management, and our customer while handling the day-to-day decisions that keep everything moving.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate daily driver schedules, routes, and assignments
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support to drivers
  • Monitor daily operations and make quick adjustments when issues arise
  • Solve problems in real time to ensure deliveries are completed successfully
  • Verify vehicles, routes, documentation, and deliveries are ready for the day
  • Communicate professionally with drivers, customers, and management
  • Reinforce company safety procedures and operational standards
  • Help train, coach, and support team members
  • Maintain accurate records and basic operational reports
  • Assist with local deliveries or cover routes when needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve daily operations and service

Our operation consists primarily of a small fleet of vans making local deliveries in the Columbus area. The work involves light products, including bags and coolers, rather than heavy freight or tractor-trailer operations. No CDL is required.

What We're Looking For

The right person does not need to know every part of our business on day one. We can teach the operation.

What matters most is finding someone who:

  • Has previous leadership, supervisory, management, or team-lead experience
  • Has strong people skills and communicates well with different personalities
  • Can earn the respect of a team while holding people accountable
  • Takes ownership and does not need to be told what to do every step of the way
  • Thinks on their feet and makes sound decisions when plans change
  • Remains calm and solutions-focused when unexpected problems arise
  • Is organized, dependable, and comfortable managing multiple priorities
  • Is willing to complete a hands-on training period and learn our operation
  • Has basic computer and mobile-device skills

Experience in transportation, delivery, dispatch, logistics, fleet operations, route management, or a similar environment is a plus, but we encourage candidates with strong leadership backgrounds in other industries to apply.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company and insurer driving requirements
  • Ability to successfully complete required background screening consistent with applicable requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work on-site in Columbus, OH
  • Ability to occasionally make local deliveries or cover a route when needed

Schedule & Compensation

  • Full-time
  • Approximately 40 hours per week
  • On-site in Columbus, OH
  • $35,000-$50,000 per year, depending on experience

Why Join Safelift Transportation?

Safelift Transportation has been part of the Columbus transportation community for decades. We are a small, established operation where people know one another, take ownership of their work, and play an important role in keeping the business successful.

This is not a position where we expect someone to walk in knowing everything immediately. We are looking for the right person first and are prepared to invest the time to train them properly.

If you have strong leadership skills, good judgment, enjoy working with people, and want an opportunity to take ownership of an operation, we would like to hear from you.

Apply today to be considered for our Transportation Operations Supervisor position.
