What is a transmission rebuilder?

A Transmission Rebuilder is a specialized automotive technician who disassembles, diagnoses, repairs, and reassembles vehicle transmissions. They work with both manual and automatic transmissions, identifying worn or damaged parts, and replacing or refurbishing them to restore proper function. Transmission Rebuilders must have a thorough understanding of transmission systems, attention to detail, and mechanical aptitude. Their work helps extend the life of vehicles and ensures safe, reliable operation.

What does a transmission rebuilder do?

A transmission rebuilder is a specialized mechanic who handles the maintenance and repair of vehicle transmissions. As a transmission rebuilder, you typically operate in a body shop and work with standard mechanic tools to service cars. Your responsibilities are to diagnose vehicle transmission issues, rebuild transmissions to manufacturer specifications, and ensure these systems work efficiently and effectively. You handle gears, clutches, and other parts to assist with the recreation of the transmission, as well as properly remove and reinstall transmissions. Other duties involve maintaining the cleanliness of your area and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transmission rebuilder?

To excel as a Transmission Rebuilder, you need a solid understanding of automotive mechanics, transmission systems, and diagnostic techniques, often supported by vocational training or ASE certification. Mastery of specialized tools like transmission jacks, torque wrenches, and diagnostic scanners is crucial for precise repairs and rebuilds. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help ensure quality work and clear coordination with team members or customers. These competencies are vital for delivering reliable transmission rebuilds, minimizing errors, and maintaining customer satisfaction in a technical and safety-sensitive field.

What are some common challenges a transmission rebuilder faces during the diagnostic and rebuilding process?

Transmission Rebuilders often encounter challenges such as accurately diagnosing internal issues without extensive disassembly, sourcing quality replacement parts, and working with transmissions from various makes and models. The job also requires maintaining attention to detail while cleaning, inspecting, and reassembling complex components to manufacturer specifications. Collaborating with service advisors and technicians is essential to ensure the rebuilt transmission addresses the initial customer concern and meets quality standards.

Job description

Lead the Expansion of ERM's Electric Transmission Advisory Practice Across the West

ERM is seeking a senior leader with deep transmission expertise and strong utilitysector relationships to grow and elevate our electric transmission advisory business across the West and nationally. This is a Partnerlevel opportunity to shape strategy, influence the market, and lead some of the most consequential infrastructure projects in the country.

Why This Role Matters

Transmission constraints are now one of the biggest barriers to the U.S. energy transition. Clients across the Western States and the broader U.S. need advisors who can navigate siting, routing, permitting, regulatory engagement, and stakeholder complexity at scale. ERM delivers more than $250M in powerrelated projects annually, and we are expanding our leadership bench to meet accelerating market demand.

This role positions you at the intersection of industry need and strategic influence-helping utilities, developers, and grid operators bring critical infrastructure online.

What You'll Drive

  • Lead major electric transmission projects from concept through construction.

  • Guide regulatory strategy, and related approvals.

  • Expand ERM's market influence with utilities, developers, and transmission owners.

  • Mentor and grow high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.

  • Advance ERM's thought leadership in transmission siting, compliance, and grid modernization.

  • Build and deepen strategic client relationships that drive long-term growth.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • 15+ years in transmission siting/routing, environmental permitting, impact assessment, or regulatory strategy.

  • Strong relationships with utilities, developers, or transmission owners.

  • Experience in the Power market across several states, especially on the West Coast.

  • Demonstrated leadership delivering complex capital projects.

  • Commercial and business development acumen.

Preferred

  • Background in grid modernization, longrange transmission planning, or strategic advisory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver highimpact consulting services.

  • Grow a portfolio of transmission clients aligned with ERM's business strategy.

  • Generate multi-milliondollar revenue through siting, NEPA/EA/EIS, routing, permitting, and compliance work.

  • Contribute to ERM's North America leadership team and strategic agenda.

  • Champion ERM's technical excellence and thought leadership in the power sector.

Why ERM?

As a Partner, you'll gain:

  • Equity ownership with significant financial upside.

  • A seat at the table to influence ERM's strategic direction.

  • A platform to amplify your voice as a thought leader in the power sector.

  • Access to a global network of experts and resources to scale your impact.

For the Partner, Transmission & Distribution position, the anticipated annual base pay is $172,000 - $236,000 (USD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, and other applicable benefits to eligible employees.

Note:Bonuses, commissions, and other forms of additional compensation are not guaranteed and subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures.
