Their role is crucial in ensuring that translation projects are delivered on time, within budget, and at the desired quality level. Translation Vendor Managers also stay updated on industry trends and help streamline procurement processes for language services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Translation Vendor Manager, and why are they important?

Job description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level and live longer through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. Protecting our members' data and ensuring our systems scale securely and reliably is core to this mission.
As an Engineering Manager on the Client Platform team, you will lead a team responsible for building and scaling the systems that enable WHOOP to deliver a seamless, high-quality multilingual experience across mobile, web, and backend services. You will also be responsible for overhauling our Design Systems across mobile and web properties. This includes owning the infrastructure, tooling, and workflows that power localization, internationalization (i18n), and right-to-left (RTL) support, as well as consistent design patterns across our entire brand experience, expanding WHOOP's reach and brand presence.
You will operate at the intersection of platform engineering, product experience, and global expansion, partnering closely with Product, Design, Marketing, and external vendors to ensure projects are delivered accurately, efficiently, and at scale. This role is highly execution-focused, with an emphasis on building reliable systems, improving developer workflows, and enabling design consistency and rapid addition of new languages while navigating tradeoffs like vendor vs. in-house solutions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own the execution and delivery of the Translations and Design Systems roadmap, including RTL support, localization infrastructure, and developer tooling
  • Lead and grow a team of engineers responsible for translation pipelines, language services, and design systems across mobile, web, and backend
  • Drive improvements to developer workflows, reducing manual processes, delays, and operational friction in the current system
  • Partner with Product, Design, QA, and Marketing to ensure high-quality member experiences
  • Oversee the integration and evolution of translation vendors, APIs, and internal systems (e.g., Smartling, AI-based translation workflows)
  • Ensure systems support scalable language expansion, including complex requirements like bidirectional text, RTL layouts, and data-heavy UI components
  • Drive adoption of a consistent design language across all front end platforms, partnering closely with our design team
  • Establish strong operational practices, including monitoring, debugging, and maintaining accuracy and freshness across services
  • Collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams to ensure systems are reliable, performant, and well-integrated into the broader architecture
  • Manage team execution, balancing new feature delivery, infrastructure improvements, and technical debt reduction
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proven experience managing and developing software engineers in a platform or devex-focused environment
  • Experience delivering complex, cross-functional systems that span multiple platforms (mobile, web, backend)
  • Strong technical background in distributed systems, APIs, and backend services
  • Familiarity with translation pipelines, vendor integrations, or content management systems
  • Familiarity with design systems for mobile and web and how to drive adoption while delivering value
  • Experience improving developer workflows through tooling, automation, and platform investments
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to balance speed, quality, and long-term scalability in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with or building localization, internationalization (i18n), or content delivery systems preferred
  • Experience building out a new design system and fostering adoption across an organization preferred
  • Familiarity with translation platforms such as Smartling or AI-based translation systems preferred
  • Experience building or scaling internal platforms that support global product expansion preferred
  • Knowledge of mobile and frontend challenges related to localization & design systems (iOS, Android, web) preferred
