Job Summary

$45,695 - $70,898 / year DOQ + Full-Time County Benefits 

Performs responsible work assisting Transit Supervisors to respond to issues that impact consistent service to customers; acts as supervisor in the absence of the Transit Supervisor on assigned shift.

Responsibilities

Assists Transit Supervisor by working with bus drivers to resolve issues that impact service to customers.
During assigned shift, provides customer service information; manages on-route customer and vehicle incidents; investigates and reports on transit vehicle accidents or incidents; ensures inter and intra shift communication flow among bus drivers and staff.
Relieves drivers for scheduled breaks and meals; provides coaching or training to new and established bus drivers; manages driver performance.
May operate a bus over a designated route in accordance with arranged time schedules; collects fares, picks up and discharges passengers at pre-arranged locations; observes behavior and maintains safe and orderly conditions on the bus; provides information regarding bus service to passengers and the public; collects and turns in daily fare receipts; inspects bus prior to and after daily operation; cleans bus and may perform minor vehicle maintenance.
Fills in for Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) Dispatcher as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and some experience operating multi-passenger vehicles; some supervisory, management and/or dispatching experience preferred.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) with Passenger and Air-Brake Endorsements prior to employment.
Must possess or obtain within 90 days of hire a valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement and air brakes and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County's criteria.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of passenger buses or similar automotive equipment; traffic laws and regulations applicable to equipment operation; hazards of equipment operation and of appropriate safety precautions; some knowledge of the geography of the County; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Skills in using: of computer software including Computer Aided Dispatch and Microsoft Office Suite; operation of assigned equipment.
Ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe manner and to adhere to time schedules; deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
