JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:            Training Instructor

Reports to:        Training Manager

FLSA Status:      Exempt

Division:             HMC

Department:     Training

Location(s):       San Diego

 

POSITION SUMMARY:   With minimal supervision provides a comprehensive learning and development program for the technical employee that enhances knowledge, skills, and productivity. Develops and designs, organizes and implements and conducts training programs. Champions a continuous learning environment. This role is based in San Diego California, with extensive travel required to Hawaii to conduct technical, operation and maintenance training for customers and technicians, as directed by management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Conduct technical training to include but not limited to applied electrical, engines/powertrain, hydraulics and applied failure analysis,
  2. Assists with creating a skills database and tracking training progress.
  3. Help coordinate TCDP (Technician Career Development Plan).
  4. Helps coordinate skills inventories for employees to identify training gaps (TCDP and HTCP).
  5. Designs curricula, class materials and facilitate classes according to the skills inventory results and requests by management.
  6. Works with key company personnel in developing class schedules.
  7. Attends necessary classes to become proficient within his/her learning plan.
  8. Keeps informed with new products and conducts NPI courses.
  9. Coordinates alternative training delivery methods such as computer-based training programs, web deliverable training programs and distance learning programs for companywide learning programs.
  10. Provides customer training as well as internal training.
  11. Conduct safety training as required such as lock out tag out.
  12. Perform any job that may be assigned as necessary to meet the company, department or individual goals and objectives.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Must have associate's degree (AA/AS) or equivalent.
  2. Must have minimum 5 years' technical training experience.
  3. Must obtain Caterpillar CIAP certification (Company Supported Program) within two years of employment.
  4. Must have proven written and oral communication skills.
  5. Must have proven presentation skills with the ability to answer questions of Management, staff, employees or customers.
  6. Must have strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Must be flexible and have a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  8. Must be able to work independently or as a member of a team handling multiple projects and meet demanding deadlines.
  9. Must be available for frequent travel to support regional training initiatives.
  10. Must have a valid CA Class C Driver's License, with a clean driving record.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain.
  2. Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools.
  3. Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. daily, frequent exertion. Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools.
  4. Handling: Works with hands.
  5. Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction
  6. Standing: Remains in standing position if required to perform various functions of the job
  7. Climbing: In and out of equipment.
  8. Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operate heavy equipment.
  9. Talking: Communicates via telecommunications and in person.
  10. Sitting: Sits in equipment and vehicles.
  11. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist
  12. Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication by radio, phone and in person.
  13. Laying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL:        

    1. Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
    2. Temp/Weather: Works in a warehouse and outside with variations of temperature and weather.
    3. Exposure: Foul odors, fumes and harsh substances.
