Job description
The Program Coordinator will work with the graduate and professional schools at Duke University to ensure that the University meets legal obligations and responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and additional disability-related laws and ordinances. The Program Coordinator will timely and effectively assess and determine the need for disability-related accommodations for graduate and professional students. This includes evaluating appropriate medical documentation, meeting with students individually to discuss their limitations in the academic setting and identifying appropriate accommodations, collaborating with faculty, staff, and relevant campus departments to implement accommodations effectively. Through an interactive process, the Program Coordinator will determine appropriate provisions of auxiliary aids and services, as well as accommodations in the classroom, testing environment, campus housing, dining services, parking and transportation, and additional support services as needed.
What You'll Do- Apply a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), American with Disabilities Amendment Act (2008), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other relevant disability-related laws and ordinances to specific accommodation requests and other situations that may arise. Responsible for staying up-to-date with any changes or updates in the laws.
- Engage in the interactive process with graduate and professional students to determine what reasonable accommodations should be provided, including: Review and analyze student medical and psychological documentation, meet with students to clarify accommodation needs, and collaborate with appropriate partners to assess reasonableness and implement reasonable accommodations.
- Participate in the formulation and regular review of SDAO policies, procedures, and documentation guidelines, as well as implementing these policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, accommodation requests, and any other relevant information. Generate reports as needed to assess program effectiveness and compliance.
- Assist the Director in developing and providing educational training sessions for the graduate and professional programs, faculty, and staff.
- Provide guidance to graduate programs regarding the implementation of academic accommodations.
- Maintain a collaborative working relationship with appropriate partners, including the Graduate School, and Disability Services Liaisons.
- Assist with pregnancy-related accommodation requests for graduate and professional students under Title IX and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA).
- Responsible for representing the SDAO on behalf of Duke University/Health Systems by attending professional meetings such as AHEAD (Association on Higher Education and Disability), assistive technology expos, as well as committees within the university.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., disability studies, counseling, education) is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other disability-related laws and regulations.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational or support services setting.
- Excellent analytical skills to assess student documentation and determine appropriate accommodations.
- Effective and flexible communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload effectively.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with assistive technologies and office productivity software.
Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
ExperienceWork requires one year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.
