Job description

Position Summary
The Gas Construction Technician Trainee (TT) is an entry level position in the line of progression for Operations Technician. The position involves working in a construction crew and assisting the crew in its day-to-day construction and maintenance functions. Work is frequently performed near pressurized gas lines, requiring skills and safe work practices. The individual in this position is expected to learn the Company's distribution system, construction, and maintenance procedures.
Responsibilities
Primary Position Responsibilities
  • Wear appropriate PPE and other safety equipment, as necessary.
  • Follow OSHA, CoServ specifications, safety procedures, and all federal state and local standards.
  • Installs and maintains CoServ gas system, including mains, residential and commercial services, and equipment.
  • Responds to damage gas mains, services, or equipment.
  • Assist installing, maintaining, and operating measuring stations, district regulator stations and other equipment.
  • Works on Hot Tapping and Plugging Operations.
  • Pinpoints gas leaks.
  • Operates utility vehicles and machinery, including DOT trucks, trailers, backhoe, excavator, and other specialized machinery used in the natural gas industry.
  • Assists in Emergency Response Program (ERP) situations.
  • Uses hand and power tools, including combustible gas indicator (CGI), Squeeze Tools, Flame Pack, and other specialized tools used in the natural gas industry.
  • Works in Construction on-call rotation.
  • Mans fire extinguisher when working around live or blowing gas.
  • Able to read company maps and understand gas feeds.
  • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures and guidelines including reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor.
  • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines including reporting suspected information security incidents to Tech Support.

Secondary Position Responsibilities
  • Receives training as directed by the Crew Supervisor.
  • Must pass and maintain Company Operator Qualifications (OQs).
  • Must pass and maintain Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fit Test and Poly Fusion certification.
  • Attending regularly scheduled Safety Meetings.
  • Must maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Maintain daily timesheet.
  • Attends CoServ University training as required.
  • Performs other duties and activities as directed.

Skills and Abilities Required
  • Must demonstrate proficiency and job knowledge to advance to the next level in the Employee Development Program (EDP), through competency assessment and/ or performance evaluation.
  • Skills to utilize Microsoft Office, IBM Maximo, and iVue.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow CoServ maps, safety handbook, workorders, and staking sheets.
  • Ability to learn CoServ's service area and distribution system.

Physical Requirements
  • Works outdoors 95% of the time in all types of weather conditions and environmental conditions such as rough terrain, heavy underbrush, rough soil conditions, etc.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and / or crouch.
  • Drives company vehicle.
  • Works extended hours as needed or directed.
  • Work in deep excavation, inside shoring equipment.
  • Work while wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for short periods of time.
  • Work in potentially hazardous conditions caused by accidental release of natural gas.
  • Works in potentially hazardous conditions caused by pets and wildlife in or near the work site.
  • Works in areas with possible exposure to poison oak, poison ivy, and insect stings.
  • Performs call out duties.
  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, etc.

Other Requirements
  • Reside within reasonable response time to CoServ Gas service area. (30 minutes)
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Class A commercial driver's license with a tanker endorsement.
