Job description

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for Division Head of Diagnostic Imaging . This leader will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the division. Successful candidate will be an accomplished physician and proven leader. The Division Head of Diagnostic Imaging reports to the Chief Physician Executive.

The primary purpose of the Division Head is to provide leadership and assume full responsibility for all areas of the academic division, including, but not limited to, direct patient care; basic, translational, and clinical research within the department; faculty development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; finance and budgeting; space administration and departmental strategic planning. The Division Head is accountable for setting and achieving measurable outcomes across clinical volume, research growth, innovation (including AI and theranostics), and leadership talent development. The Division Head will provide career development opportunities and mentorship for department faculty and trainees, and foster their growth in clinical, research, academic, and professional areas. The Division Head will also represent the division, and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters. The Division Head will advance strategic growth initiatives, including expansion of theranostics capabilities, advancing integration of artificial intelligence into clinical and research workflows, and development of external collaborations and opportunities to support delivery of high-quality cancer-related imaging services across the University of Texas System, the University of Texas Dell Medical School at Austin, and the MD Anderson Cancer Network.

The Division of Diagnostic Imaging combines the best elements of a traditional hospital radiology service with those of an academic radiology department and strategically aligns them with the nation's top cancer center mission areas of clinical care, education, research, and prevention. All faculty, administrative, and classified staff are salaried employees of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. As of March 2026, there are 650 employees: 260 faculty, two administrative professionals, 302 classified staff and 86 trainees and students. The mission of Diagnostic Imaging is to contribute to the prevention and elimination of cancer through outstanding patient-centered imaging, transformative research and exceptional education. Its vision is to be the preeminent diagnostic and interventional cancer imaging center, recognized for our outcomes- driven patient care, innovative science, and the excellence of our people.

The Division of Diagnostic Imaging is comprised of nine academic departments: eight clinical and one basic science research. The eight clinical departments include Abdominal Imaging, Breast Imaging, Imaging Physics, Interventional Radiology, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine and Thoracic Imaging. The basic science research department is the Department of Cancer Systems Imaging.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience post clinical degree

  • M.D. or equivalent degree

  • Board certification by the American Board of Radiology

  • Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure

  • Demonstration of clinical excellence and performance

  • Administrative experience at a departmental or institutional level

  • Proven track record of successful and independent clinical or translational research and grant or protocol funding

  • Demonstration of adoption and integration of advanced diagnostic imaging technologies and innovation

  • Consistent record of contributions to education or training and to mentoring of trainees, faculty, or staff

  • Progressive leadership experience in an academic setting, preferred experience in an oncologic setting

  • Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter- disciplinary relationships
