Job description

Overview

Inpatient- Pharmcacy Technician Trainee

Allen Hospital, Waterloo,Iowa

Part-time-  20 hours/week

Hours: mix of 1st shift, 2nd shift and weekend rotation

Functions as a Pharmacy Technician as defined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners.  Assists pharmacists in entering prescription orders, preparing and distributing drug products and maintaining accurate medication records.  All duties are performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Operational Functions

    • Prepares and distributes medication products to fulfill medication orders
    • Accurately compounds sterile and non-sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with facility, state, and federal laws and regulations
    • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department and directing calls to appropriate personnel in a professional and courteous manner
    • Ensures appropriate and adequate medication inventory by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, packaging medications, and ordering supplies
    • Accurately performs data entry for patient billing
    • Ensures proper medication storage
    • Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department

Compliance

    • Ensures the appropriate preparation and dispersal of medications in accordance with facility, state, and national laws and regulations
    • Prioritizes the importance of preventing errors, accidents, and infections within the workplace and reports potential or actual concerns immediately
    • Compliant with Iowa Board of Pharmacy requirements for technician in training
Qualifications

Will consider Certified Pharmacy Technicians

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be high school graduate/equivalent or higher level of education.
  • Must be registered with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee prior to first day of work.
  • Must then maintain a current Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
  • Must obtain registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician prior to the expiration of the technician trainee registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.
  • Must be able to proficiently read, write and speak English.
  • Must have strong math skills, with some basic algebra.
  • Some college training preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy desirable.
  • Experience in a health care facility desirable.
  • Proficient in using computer systems.
