Job description

Department Overview

Doctors throughout the region refer patients to the experienced pediatric urology team at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Our team offers expert evaluation, diagnosis and care for infants and children with disorders of the urinary tract, bladder, kidneys and genitals. We provide more medical and surgical services than any other pediatric urology program in Oregon. Our surgeons are board-certified and trained in surgery specific to children. Our surgeons have expertise in robotic surgery for exceptional precision. We are teachers, leaders and innovators. We are dedicated to state-of-the-art urologic care, surgical expertise and research. Our pediatric specialists offer the most advanced bladder evaluation in the area.

The responsibilities of the position are to support the clinical operations of the Pediatric Urology practice at Doernbecher and Randall Children's Hospital. The APP will work in partnership with faculty physicians, RNs, and CMAs to provide excellent clinical care and customer service in the inpatient and outpatient areas.

Function/Duties of Position

The APP will be expected to assist the Pediatric Urologists in the operating room to support maximal operating room utilization at both Doernbecher and Randall Children's hospital.

The APP works to assure a smooth transition of patient care and education between the inpatient and outpatient arenas to decrease length of stay, improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction.

The APP may participate in the ongoing care of hospitalized patients on the pediatric urology service and handle pediatric urology inpatient consultations including Consult service call as needed. Will round with faculty physicians and residents and share responsibility for daily progress notes, orders, patient care and discharging patients. When appropriate, perform history and physical exams and admission orders for patients being admitted. For patients being discharged will perform the necessary discharge teaching, orders, prescriptions and prepare discharge summaries. Daily updates to referring physicians by phone, fax or email.

In addition to key job responsibilities, qualifications and other job requirements listed below, the APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice. The APP provides an outstanding level of professional performance in quality of clinical care. Professional performance is delivered in a manner that is compliant with the regulation and guidelines of all relevant regulating bodies (i.e. DNV Healthcare, The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, OHSU IRB, NIH and all other state, federal, and institutional regulatory guidelines.) Treats all patients, research subjects, trainees and co-workers with dignity and respect.

Required Qualifications

Nurse practitioner: Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program. Current and Active Oregon Nurse Practitioner provider license; Operating room first assistant certification preferred. Experience in a Urology practice preferred.

Physician Assistant: Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Current national certification. Current Oregon Physician Assistant license. Experience in a Urology practice preferred.

All: Prescriptive Authority (DEA License)

Knowledge and Skills: Experience in a surgical practice (Pediatric Urology preferred), but newly graduated PAs or NPs with a growth mindset will also be considered. Must demonstrate clinical excellence and the ability to multi-task and prioritize; ability to be a self-starter and organized; ability to work as a cohesive team member and independently. Candidates must possess a positive and enthusiastic attitude, an eagerness to learn the specialized background of urologic surgery (including robotic surgery), and a steadfast commitment to continued education. We seek a provider dedicated to furthering the field of pediatric urology through innovation and the pursuit of advanced clinical knowledge; must possess excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and active listening).
