Job Summary

This is the intermediate level of the Business Energy Advisor classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in business energy areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied

The purpose of the Business Energy Advisor is to develop relationships with Small/Medium and Large business customers, introduce those customers to Duke Energy Products and Services and close/win customer projects for energy efficiency products and services. And nurture the long term relationship for further Cross-Sell opportunities as new products are available for the SMB markets.

This Business Energy Advisor position will conduct on-site energy assessments and provide energy analysis for commercial, industrial, and government customers. Responsibilities span the North Coastal and South Coastal regions, primarily supporting customers in Pinellas County and the Florida Panhandle.

Responsibilities

  • Customer Interactions
    • Works with commercial customers with an emphasis on qualifying prospective customers both in and out of the Duke service areas by collecting usage data, building and site information.
    • For regulated energy efficiency product and service sales, BEA sales process includes:
      • Identifying customer needs within their facilities.
      • Explaining program benefits, assisting in movement through the project process including assistance with identifying trade allies and helping customers understand the Application process.
      • Tracking and reporting is vital to each step of the project success and should be considered a valuable part of the success of each project a customer undertakes
      • Must have a thorough working knowledge of all the of the company's products and services
  • Pipeline/Database management
  • Team Collaboration/meetings
  • Internal/External/Trade Shows Presentations

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED
  • 3 years minimum required related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Environmental Science, Energy Management, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in energy efficiency, energy services, sustainability consulting, or utility programs.
  • Experience conducting or overseeing energy audits, field surveys, facility assessments, and customer energy analyses.
  • Knowledge of commercial building systems, including HVAC, lighting, controls, mechanical systems, energy management practices, and efficiency technologies.
  • Ability to identify system issues, recommend energy conservation measures, and translate technical findings into practical customer solutions.
  • Understanding of municipal decision-making and procurement processes, with the ability to influence public-sector stakeholders on energy and sustainability investments.
  • Experience working with customers and trade allies to support rebate applications, processing, and delivery.
  • Strong communication, leadership, interpersonal, customer service, and technical training skills.
  • Familiarity with Duke Energy clean energy offerings, including transportation electrification programs.
  • Ability to represent the department in industry and professional organizations as needed.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Facility/Technical - understanding building envelope and equipment. What drives energy related costs and how energy efficiency drives costs down.
  • Utility/Systems/Products - General utility knowledge including but not limited to Billing systems, Distribution systems, Utility rate structure, Basic knowledge of EE technologies Energy Efficiency and other products & services. Due to the technical nature of the products, basic understanding of commercial buildings and electrical loads are helpful
  • Sales/Customer - Capable Customer interaction experience
  • Be able to juggle deadlines, follow-up, and varying types of calls to and from different industries, including schools, healthcare, biotechnology, municipalities, retail, warehousing, and others.
  • Promote a collaborative atmosphere through their actions within their own department, as well as with other departments, to ensure mutual success and as well as superior customer experience.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce or similar CRM.
  • Maintain accurate sales records/documentation.
  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software tools and demonstrated ability to learn new systems
  • Sales and/or customer facing experience
  • Comfort level with public speaking
  • Solid phone skills
  • Self-starter
  • Proven ability to organize and manage large volumes of information
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment to achieve shared goals
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to interact effectively

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
